Miss Thelma Huffman, her chum, __ ___ Brumfield, have __________.

_________ visiting friends and relatives in Huntington.

Miss Wealtha Lambert gave a party Tuesday night. A nice time was reported.

Mr. Willie Payne left this afternoon for Morrisville, W.Va.

Mr. Lonnie and Leona Lambert will spend Thanksgiving in Hunitngton.

Miss Edna M. Brumfield stayed home all day Sunday. Wonder where her sweetie was?

Edith and Ethel Frye are going to school these days.

School is proceeding nicely on Lore Fork.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Horn Skeens a 11 pound baby girl, Buleauh Ellen.

Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Gill made a flying trip to Hamlin attending to personal affairs.

Miss Lillie Lucas has a case of chickenpox and is very ill.

Mr. Wayne C. Brumfield will visit home folks Saturday evening.

Ernest and Irwin Lucas attended church at Rector Sunday.

Miss Anna Fry seems to be quite ill now. Hope she will soon recover.

Miss Linnie Brumfield had lots of company Sunday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Guy are planning to go to Huntington this week.

Mrs. Lizzie Frye entertained company Sunday evening.

Mrs. L. Huffman entertained a bunch of friends and guests for dinner on the Fourth. A delightful dinner was served.

Miss Thelma Huffman is on a vacation in Charleston visiting friends.

The Death Angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lambert last Sunday and took their new born babe away.

Mr. Wayne Brumfield was the guest of Thelma Huffman Sunday.

Miss Edna Brumfield and Lonnie Lambert are engaged to be married July 15th.

The Death Angel visited the home of Mrs. Lillie Curry and took her husband away last Saturday morning.

NOTE: Lon and Edna married on December 26, 1923 in Lincoln County, WV.

We are having some nice weather at this writing.

We certainly are having some real good meetings at this place. Most everybody enjoyed themselves going.

Miss Edna Brumfield is teaching school at Green Shoal, W.Va.

Miss Lizzie Payne arrived home Saturday evening.

Miss Girtie Smith, Laura and Edith Frye were the dinner guests of Miss Thelma Huffman Saturday.

Miss Lillie and Lonnie (Lincoln?) attended church Sunday at Lucas, W.Va.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Spears a fine girl baby.

Mr. Wayne Brumfield was calling on Miss Thelma Huffman Sunday and Thursday night.

Mr. Willie Payne has returned home after visiting friends and relatives in Kentucky.

Mr. Sid Nelson and Miss Lillie Curry were united in wedlock this week.

Miss Pearl Brumfield visited home folks Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. James Gue made a flying trip to Gill, W.Va., Friday.

Mr. Bruce Hatfield was calling on Miss Weltha Lambert Sunday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Luther Harper visited home folks last week.

Mrs. Georgia Smith is on the sick list now. We hope she will soon recover.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cooper are taking a vacation on Pea Ridge, W.Va.

Mr. Tom Frye was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Huffman Sunday.

Miss Thelma Huffman and Miss Pearl Brumfield were seen out horse back riding Sunday.

Miss Virginia Brumfield was shopping in Logan Saturday.

Bunch Lambert, Bob Gilbert, and Shorty Toney were seen riding down the big road Sunday morning.

Mr. Emma Lucas went to church Sunday at Gill, W.Va.

Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Gill attended church Sunday.

Mr. Milt Ferrell seems to be very ill now. Hope he will be able to be out again soon.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brumfield spent a few days at Leet, W.Va., visiting the old folks.

The big revival meeting will begin Sunday at Leet.

Mr. John Gartin of Hart held meeting at the Lucas school building Sunday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Lizzy Huffman were seen out car riding Sunday.

Miss Lennie Brumfield were calling on Miss Lambert Sunday morning.

Miss Lillie Lucas visited home folks Saturday and Sunday.

Mr. and Misses Everett Paisley were the guests of Miss Huffman Sunday.

Mr. Lonnie Lambert was calling at the home of Miss Edna Brumfield Sunday.

One of Sam Lambert’s horses fell dead while hauling on the road Wednesday.

Miss Thelma Huffman and Miss Edna Brumfield were shopping in Logan last Saturday.

Miss Minnie and Maud Frye were out horseback riding Sunday.

Miss Gertie Smith went chestnut gathering yesterday.

Miss Nora Lucas seems to be enjoying herself fine these days.

Here we come again as before, making folks interested in the Dear Old Banner.

We had a nice meeting at the Lucas school house Sunday, also baptizing.

Mr. Wayne C. Brumfield attended church Sunday.

Miss Thelma E. Huffman enjoyed herself Sunday with Mr. Brumfield.

Miss Wealtha Lambert was the guest of Miss Thelma Huffman Sunday.

Mr. George Hager and Miss Girty Smith were seen out horse back riding.

Hazel M. Toney visited her grandmother recently.

Miss Tinnie Brumfield entertained a lot of company Sunday.

Edna Brumfield seems to be awful downhearted. She didn’t go anyplace Sunday. We hope she will soon cheer up.

Lucy Reynolds made a flying trip to the dentist in Logan one day last week.

Mrs. Georgia Huffman and little kids are coming to visit Mrs. L. Huffman.

There have been a lot of boys and girls in bathing here.

Some Combinations: Wayne and his sweetie, Lomie and his house, Tillie and her pink smock, Wealth and her parasol, Hazel going to grandma’s, Thelma and her hoe going to the cornfield, Forest and a por(?) fish.

A correspondent named “Red Rose and Smiles” from Leet on Big Ugly Creek in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on June 15, 1923:

We are having nice weather at this writing.

The boys and girls of Leet are enjoying themselves playing ball.

Our Sunday school is progressing nicely.

Mrs. Linza Huffman is very ill at present. We hope she will soon be enjoying good health.

Miss Thelma Huffman has made a flying trip to Logan to attend the Billy Sunday meetings.

There has been several mad dogs around the creek in the last week.

Crops and gardens are looking fine around Leet, and young chickens are getting ripe for the frying pan.

Mr. A.J. Gill and wife seem to be very busy in the store, as there is plenty of business here.

Mrs. Georgie Smith and family were visiting Mrs. L. Huffman Sunday. They spent a long happy day with her.

Mr. Ance Curry of Leet is very ill and there will be prayer service at his home tonight.

Mr. Wayne C. Brumfield was calling at the home of Miss Thelma Huffman Sunday, but she had gone to Logan.

Mr. George Hager called on Miss Gertie Smith Sunday.

Miss Weltha Lambert was out horseback riding Sunday.

Miss Lillie Lucas and sister were calling on friends in Sand Creek Sunday.

Mrs. Bell Gue seems to be enjoying life these cool days, as she is through hoeing corn for a few days.

James Gue will hold a protracted meeting in Leet soon. Come on, Jim. We like to hear you preach.

We are having some nice weather at this writing and everybody seems to be enjoying life.

School is progressing nicely here under the management of W.J. Bachtel, principal.

Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Linzie Huffman, a big girl baby.

Mr. James Gill and wife and little granddaughter are spending a few days of their vacation in Salt Rock, West Virginia.

Miss Thelma Huffman, Miss Tinnie Brumfield and some other girls were out car riding Sunday afternoon.

Mrs. Betty Hannah has been visiting friends in Leet.

Mr. J.B. Parsley and daughters of Ottawa visited Mr. Huffman Sunday.

Miss Wealtha Lambert and two sisters were out walking Sunday afternoon.

Misses Laura and Edith Frye will give a party Wednesday night.

Mr. Irvin Lucas was calling at the home of Miss Dora Skeens Sunday.

Nora Lucas, Angie Lucas, Clarence Lambert were out horse back riding Sunday afternoon.

Mrs. Lizzie Frye visited at Mrs. Huffman’s Saturday evening.

Dear old Banner, here we come with our bit of news.

L. Hoffman has just completed the new school house at the Pleasant valley, Leet, W.Va.

Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Gill spent a few days vacation on Madison Creek last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gue made a business trip to Huntington last week.

Mrs. Joe Lewis and family of Lorado were visiting friends at this place last week.

Mr. Wayne Brumfield was calling on Miss Thelma Huffman Sunday.

Miss M. Lucas of Toney, W.Va., and Mr. Boyer of Big Creek were quietly married Wednesday. We wish them much happiness for a future life. They will spend their honeymoon in New York.

Miss Pearl Brumfield’s school is progressing nicely at Lucas, W.Va.

Miss Aggie Lucas, Miss Thelma and Rosa and a bunch of other girls were at a party Saturday night and reported a nice time.

Let’s not forget the 4th Sunday in this month the big meeting in the new school building here at Leet, W.Va.

Mr. Irwin and Ernest Lucas were the guests of Miss Thelma Huffman Friday and Saturday.

Miss Vergie Brumfield left Sunday evening for Earling, W.Va., where she will remain to teach school.

Miss Thelma Huffman entertained a bunch of girls and boys with piano and Victrola music Sunday.

Mr. Ernest Lucas was calling on Miss Sylvia Cyphers Sunday.

Miss Nora Lucas and George Lucas were out horse back riding Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Feels were down to visit home folks last week.

Miss Lillie Lucas was calling on homefolks Saturday and Sunday.

Mrs. L. Hoffman seems to be really busy now a days canning fruit.

NOTE: In the mid-1990s, I enjoyed several telephone calls and an exchange of letters with Vergie and Pearl Brumfield, who were daughters of my great-great-uncle Jim Brumfield.

A correspondent named “Black Eyes” from Leet on Big Ugly Creek in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on August 10, 1923:

Mr. Linzia Huffman has returned to Logan to his same job.

Mrs. Lillie Huffman is on the sick list.

Lawrence Toney, son of John Toney, died Sunday evening at 5:30, July 28. Dear old Aunt Susie Lucas, age 80, died August 2, 9:30 A.M. The baby son of Dutch Lucas [Burnie Lucas] died August 3, 5:30 P.M. All died of cholera morbus. They were laid to rest in the Lucas cemetery. They will be missed by their many friends.

Miss Thelma Huffman has purchased a fine Victrola.

Thelma Huffman entertained a large number of friends Sunday with her music.

Mr. Albert Gill is putting up a nice dwelling house.

Miss Alvis Walls of Huntington is the guest of Laura Lucas this week.

Charley Lucas and daughter of Lundale have been visiting friends on Lower Fork.

There will be a big meeting at Leet in the grove on the 4th Sunday. There will be eighteen baptized. Everybody come.

NOTE: “Susie Lucas” was a daughter of John H. and Rachel (Haskins) Brumfield.

We certainly are having very fine weather at this writing.

The girls and boys are enjoying themselves by playing football and other games.

Mr. Wayne C. Brumfield was the guest of Miss Thelma Huffman Monday.

Miss Edna M. Brumfield was a visitor in Leete this P.M.

Miss W. Lambert of Rector, W.Va., was a recent visitor of Miss Hazel Huffman.

Mr. L.L. Lambert seems to have all his attention on Green Shoal as he goes to see Edna Brumfield almost every Sunday.

Miss Thelma Huffman has just arrived home from Huntington.

We had a grand meeting at Dolly on the first Sunday and we are also going to have a big meeting on the third Sunday. We would like to have everybody come.

We are having a splendid Sunday school at the South Fork of Ugly.

Mrs. W.M. Payne was the guest of Mrs. Tillie Huffman Sunday.

Willie Payne was a business visitor in town recently. Come again, Willie. We are glad to see you.

Miss Thelma Huffman is going to have a long vacation in Chicago, Ill.

Mrs. J.B. Gue is a lively visitor in Dally today.

Dear Banner: Our news has been very scarce for quite awhile, but am glad to say the weather is improving nicely.

Miss Thelma Huffman entertained Mr. W.C. Brumfield Sunday with good music.

Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Lambert are visiting friends and relatives in Leet this past week.

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Hatfield spent a few days the guests of Mrs. Samuel Lambert.

Mr. Ossie Dial seemed to have been broken hearted Sunday. The reason was he lost his sweetheart Saturday night.

Mr. L. Hoffman is spending a few days at home with his wife and children.

Miss Nellie Lucas went to Sunday school Sunday and reported a nice time.

Mr. Jim Brumfield and his son were seen going through here late Monday evening.

Miss Pearl Brumfield stayed home all day Sunday. Wonder why?

There will be a pie supper at the Laurel Fork Saturday night. Hope there will be a large gathering.

Mrs. W.M. Payne made a flying trip to Sunday school Sunday.

Most everybody seems to be busy now-a-days picking berries.

Misses Drury and Edith Frye were at Sunday school.

Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Hill are vacationing now in Huntington, W.Va.

Most everybody who attended decoration at Rector, W.Va., Sunday, reported a nice time.

Misses Pearl and Virgie Brumfield, both of Toney, W.Va., went picnicking Sunday at Holden, W.Va., and had a nice time.

Mr. Wayne C. Brumfield was calling on Miss Thelma Huffman Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Hatfield has just returned from Huntington, W.Va.

Mrs. Lambert and family from Huntington was visiting on Ugly this past week.

Mr. Clarence Lambert and Irvin Lucas have gone back to their old job at Holden, W.Va.

Miss Hazel Toney and her grandma were out car riding.

We are real glad to see our bit of news in the dear old Banner.

Most every body attended church on Laurel Fork Sunday. Everyone reported a nice time.

Charley Huffman made a flying trip visiting relatives and friends, Sunday.

Miss Flora Rickman entertained her friend, Mr. Dial, Sunday.

Mr. James Brumfield and his son, Wetzel, were the dinner guests of friends Sunday.

Miss Thelma E. Huffman made a flying trip to Lucas, W.Va., Sunday.

Willie Payne and Anderson were seen going up the Big Ugly road, Sunday. Wonder where they were aiming?

Wayne C. Brumfield is still on the farm. Thelma says he’s real sweet.

Walter Dial will soon leave for up the river. Gee but won’t Nora be lonesome!

Sherman Lilly was calling on Miss Ruby Ferrell, Sunday evening.

Bunch Lambert and Miss Kate Reynolds were seen out horse back riding Sunday.

Rev. Jim Gee will hold services on Laurel Fork, August 21st.

Miss Nora Lucas and Ramsey Ferrell took a joy ride Sunday.

Miss Gladys Payne will remain at Silas, W.Va., for a few days.

Miss Thelma Huffman and brother, Charley, visited Mr. and Mrs. William Gill last Sunday evening.
