Here we are with a little news from our busy town.

Johnnie Workman of Micco is visiting his brother Elias Workman, who is very ill at this writing.

Sunday School is progressing nicely at Trace. We are sorry it will soon close.

Carl Adams was visiting at Mollie Robinson’s Sunday.

No one knows who the two good-looking men were who went up Hoover Sunday. They looked like Mormon preachers.

Alice McCloud was calling on friends at Dixie Adams’s Sunday.

Clinton Adams is calling on friends at Monaville this week.

Mrs. Jane Adams was visiting her daughter of Buck Fork one day this week.

Cole Adams spent Sunday at Hoover.

Daily events: Clinton and his rabbit; Wilburn going to Daniel’s; Rush going to the mail box; Mollie and her turkey.

During a recent visit to the Montgomery County Courthouse in Christiansburg, Virginia, I viewed the Last Will and Testament of Archibald Elkins (1735-1791).

In the Name of god Amen: As I the testator am in a prelarious State of health: But perfect in mind & reason: I do Announce this to Be my last will and testament:

In the first place I commit my soul into the hands of the living god. I also commit my Body to the Care of my friends to Be decently intered. I do Allow as much of my moveble property to Be desposed of as shall Be suficient to discharge all lawfulll debts. I do give and Bequeath unto my wife Margaret one third part of the tract of land I now live on (viz) the lower End of the survey (Containing five Hundred acres) ______ land During her life and after her Decease to be fairly divided Between my three Daughters (viz) Mary, Elizabeth and Lydia — the other two thirds of Sd tract off five Hundred acres that is the uper End of the survey to be Equaly divided when my son Absolem shall be twenty one years of age: and I do give and bequeath my sons David and Absolem the Above mentioned division of land to them and their heirs forever: But if either of the forementioned sons should die Before Sd Absolem shall Be of Age Sd division shall be made and devolve on the next lawfull Heir when the time shall relapse that Sd Absolem should have become twenty one years of age– I do also give and Bequeath to my son John one Hundred and thirty acres of land laying on Camp Creek when he is twenty one y ears of age. I do nominate my wife Margaret to be my Executrix to dispose of the movables and profits of all lands above mentioned Acording to the best of her judgment to bring up my Children given under my hand and seal as my last will & testament.

During a recent visit to the Montgomery County Courthouse in Christiansburg, Virginia, I viewed the Last Will and Testament of my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather George Fry (c.1725-1793).

In the Name of God, Amen: I George Fry of the County of Montgomery and State of Virginia, Farmer, Being very sick and weak in Body But of Perfect Mind and Memory thanks Begiven unto God for his Mercy Calling unto Mind the Mortality of my Body, and Knowing that it is appointed for all men once to Die; do Make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament that is to say Principally and first of all I give and Recommend my Soul into the Hand of Almighty God that gave it. My Body I Recommend to the Earth to be Buried in Decent Christian Buriel at the Discretion of my Executors Nothing Doubting but at the general Resurrection I shall Receive the same again by the Mighty Power of God. And as Touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God To bless me in this Life I give Devise and Dispose of the same in the Following Manner and Form, First I give and Bequeath to Anna Fry, my Dearly Beloved Wife one Mare and Two Cows, her Choice out of My Stock to be her own Right and Property to Dispose of as She Shall think Proper…

Deed Book 53, page 284, Lincoln County Clerk’s Office, Hamlin, WV. Typically, the Kuhn-Lowe deeds granted land already owned by the grantees but reserved mineral rights. The idea was to grant “disputed” surface ownership in exchange for relinquishment of claims to mineral rights. Local property owners who did not wish to challenge the mineral claim in court accepted the Kuhn-Lowe deed. Lincoln County records show many of these deeds.

From the Huntington (WV) Advertiser come these stories about a Chapman fracas in Lincoln County, WV, in 1887:

Bloody Affray

One of the most desperate affrays that ever occurred in this State took place at Hamlin in the adjoining county of Lincoln, last week, between Elisha, Andrew and John Chapman, on one side, and Perry Stevens, Wilson Branch and Dode Adkins on the other. It was a family affair, all the parties being related by blood or connected by marriage. The trouble originated some weeks ago between Wilson Branch and Andrew Chapman, a woman being the cause. On the day of the trouble Branch swore out a warrant and had Andrew and Elisha Chapman arrested. The two men were brought to the Court House by a constable, and while under arrest and awaiting examination by the Justice, Dode Adkins began to abuse Andrew Chapman, which he resented, and the row began. Wilson Branch, seeing the two men about to fight, drew his revolver and began firing. Andrew Chapman was hit in the right breast and left hip and fell in the road. His brother, Elisha, dropped a moment later with a bullet in his groin. Branch then turned to shoot the remaining brother, but his pistol snapped and John sprang at him with a big knife and buried the weapon in his back. Dode Adkins then rushed at John, but was stopped by the deadly knife penetrating his right shoulder. Some fifteen shots were fired during the fracas, and when it was over four men lay on the ground desperately wounded and bleeding frightfully. Elisha Chapman and Dode Adkins are the most severely wounded, the former fatally it is thought, though he was doing well at last accounts.

The indictment against Andrew, Elisha and John Chapman, and Paris Stevens, for the shooting affray which occurred in Lincoln County between the Chapmans and the Adkinses some months ago, was tried at the present term of the Circuit Court. Andrew Chapman was fined $25.00 and each of the others $5 and the cost. Wilson Branch engaged in the same difficulty and also under indictment came into court, confessed judgment and was fined. Gibson & Michie and C.W. Campbell defended the Chapmans, and Gen. C.C. Watts [defended] Wilson Branch. Judge Frank Guthrie presided during the entire term of the court, he and Judge McGinnis having exchanged circuits temporarily.

Those present were: Lola Ferrell, Martha Dingess, Gladys Lowe, Bernice Ward, Beulah Ballard, Hazel Saunders, Ella Toney, Mabel Ferrell, Dr. Ferrell, Lemar Collins, Kyle Ballard, Burva Crace, Ernest Ward, Dallas Toney, Ward and Walter Ferrell, G.W. McCloud and Arnold Barker. All reported a wonderful time.

Rev. Screeds preached at the Christian church Sunday morning and Sunday evening.

Miss Ruby Saunders spent the week end at Big Creek.

Carlos Ferrell made a flying trip to Phico Sunday.

Miss Eva Barker of Henlawson was calling here Monday afternoon.

It seems as though the farmers are not going to raise much this year as the weather is so bad.

The Sunday school is doing nicely. There were thirty-two in the intermediate class last Sunday.

Mrs. Brook Rousey and Mrs. Jim Wagner spent Sunday in Huntington.

Joe Turner is on the sick list at this writing.

Edd Johnson was called to Huntington to see his father who is quite ill.

O.J. Moses who has been here for some time has returned to his home in Huntington.

Mrs. Susan Lowe is on the sick list at this writing. We wish her quick recovery.

Miss Broda Johnson has returned to Logan after a few days’ visit with Miss Beulah Ballard.

The Junior high school pupils seem to be well pleased over getting their diplomas. We wish them success.

Daily Scenes: Beulah on the road to Phico; Carrie coming to school; Jane looking cute; Hazel and John; Inez working in the post office; Lyle calling at the office; Kyle and his sweetie.

Mr. O.J. Moses was visiting his parents in Huntington Saturday and Sunday.

Mrs. Kenneth Hilton and daughter were in Logan Monday.

The Sunday school at the Christian church is progressing nicely.

Rev. Shrive preached two delightful sermons at the Christian church Sunday. The house was crowded.

Mr. and Mrs. Hassel Perdue and son Maxey were visitors in Logan Monday.

The work on both the state and county roads is progressing finely.

Henry Conley was injured Monday by a freight train. All wish him speedy recovery.

Wonder why Miss Mable Ferrell doesn’t attend Sunday school?

An unknown correspondent from Chapmanville in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on April 29, 1927:

The work on the roads is going forward nicely. We hope Chapmanville will not be a mud hole always. It is more like Charleston already.

Rev. Remus preached here Sunday. The home was crowded.

Grover Lowe and daughters Geraldine and Dorothy from Stollings attended Sunday school and visited friends here Sunday.

John Ferrell from Virginia is visiting friends and relatives at this place.

The Sunday school is progressing finely. Everyone is invited. Rev. Reeves will preach again Sunday.

Miss Sarah Thompson was taken to the hospital at Huntington where she will be operated on for appendicitis.

Paul Bentley who is in the C. & O. hospital is said to be improving.

Cecil Shuff spent Easter with his girlfriend here.

Daily happenings: Lamar leading the choir; Jack attending Sunday school; Minnie and her smiles; Carlos going to the post office; Victor and Steve flirting with their girls; Joe attending Sunday school; Lois going to school.
