The following deed index is based on Deed Book 60 at the Lincoln County Clerk’s Office in Hamlin, WV, and relates to residents of the Harts Creek community. Most notations reflect Harts Creek citizens engaged in local land transactions; some reflect Harts Creek citizens engaged in land transactions outside of the community. These notes are meant to serve as a reference to Deed Book 60. Researchers who desire the most accurate version of this material are urged to consult the actual record book.

An unknown correspondent from Harts Creek in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on November 28, 1924:

The girls and boys all appreciate the bible school at Cole Branch.

Miss Lilly Curry was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Sunday.

Misses Lizzie Nelson and Lilly Curry took a joyful horse back ride Sunday.

Bruce McCann and Lucian Kirk were calling on Misses Harriet and Lilly Curry Sunday.

Daily things will happen–Lilly and her powders; Harriet and her watch; Roxie and her belt; Nervie and her combs; Bruce and Miss Curry’s gold ring; Lucian and his legging; Fisher and Amos wading the creek and all about Bill Thompson and his Bible; Lizzie and her hat; Janie and her coat.

Welcome to Cole Branch

Welcome to Cole Branch of Harts Creek, Lincoln County, WV. The tributary is reportedly named for C. Crane & Company, a timber firm active locally at the turn of the century. My great-great-grandfather Bill Brumfield once lived on a farm shown at the center of this photo. My great-grandparents, Pat Kirk and Eva Brumfield, were married here in 1911. My great-great-great-uncle Enoch Adkins built the house shown to the left in the 1920s. Photo taken on 2 April 2017.

An unknown local correspondent from Harts in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on February 26, 1926:

Several boys and girls of this place attended singing school at Coal Branch Sunday.

Dr. Ferrell and Cora Adkins were calling on friends at Sand Creek last Saturday evening.

Miss Jewell Brumfield attended Sunday school at Gill Sunday and was accompanied by Sylvia Ciphers and Hawkins Perry.

J.C. McEldowney of Charleston was calling on friends and relatives at Harts Saturday.

Chas. Brumfield was a business caller in Huntington Saturday.

Ward Brumfield was transacting business in Hamlin Saturday.

Blanch, Anna and Laura Lambert were visiting friends in Harts Wednesday.

Hardin Marcum was calling on Shirlie Adkins at West Hamlin Sunday.

Hendrix Brumfield attended singing at Coal Branch Sunday and reported there were over fifty singers present and the singing was progressing nicely.

Every body is planning to hunt Easter eggs here.

Mrs. C.C. Pack and daughter, Miss May, were visiting relatives in Logan Saturday and Sunday.

Enos Dials spent Sunday in Huntington.

Daily Happenings: Bob Hendrix meeting the train; Ward with the tax books; Watson with his pipe; Herb in the garage; Nora and Jewell teaching school; Bessie and Cora in the store; Aunt Cathrine with her hair; Sadie with her glasses on; Luther in his old rattle trap; Wesley reading the newspaper; Fred, the law maker.

Pat and Eva (Brumfield) Kirk, my great-grandparents, with daughters, Lois and Iris. For most of their lives, they lived on Piney Fork of West Fork of Harts Creek in Logan County, WV, Pigeon Creek in Mingo County, and Ferrellsburg in Lincoln County. Poppy and Grandma married on 30 August 1911 (my birthday) at Cole Branch of Harts Creek.
