Banco is getting to be a lively place. Traffic is getting to be so thick we will soon have to employ a traffic cop for every corner.

Jesse Harmon and W.J. Vance of Peach Creek and two girlfriends motored through Banco last Sunday afternoon.

B.R. Lucas and son Fred motored to Big Creek last Wednesday evening to attend a protracted meeting.

D.H. Harmon of this place was loading bank ties at Big Creek last week while his employees did the sawing at Spring Dale.

Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Stone and grandchildren of this place were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Stone at Blair.

H.F. Lucas and sister Marea of Banco motored to Estep last Sunday evening after the singing teacher bade us all goodbye.

Jesse Justice has obtained a new job at Spring Dale.

Wonder why Basil Duty has the blues so bad these days? Don’t worry, Basil. Ruby and Fannie will soon return.

Miss Pearl Hager was the all night guest of Miss Clara Harmon last Sunday night.

Wonder why Gardner Baisden went to meet the down train last Monday?

Annie Chapman of Hamlin was a caller in Banco last Monday morning.

Mrs. Etta Thomas and daughter Hazel were business callers in Banco last Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Varney and daughters Nellie, Lois, Mabel and Ruby attended the last day of singing at this place last Sunday.

Mrs. J.B. Lucas was the dinner guest of her mother, Mrs. D.H. Harmon, last Monday.

Luther Bias of Chapmanville was seen going through Banco last Wednesday. Wonder if he called at Pumpkin Center?

Mr. and Mrs. John Vance and children motored to the mouth of Trace Fork to visit Mrs. Vance’s father, F.D. Vance, who has been ill for some time.

Mrs. D.H. Harmon entertained as her guest on last Wednesday evening Mrs. Amanda and Nola Justice and Miss Marea Lucas of Elm Street.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Varney and children of Thomas Circle attended the singing school at Banco last Sunday conducted by Prof. Albert Estep of Limestone.

Mr. and Mrs. T.D. Butcher and children of Wilkinson motored through Banco Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Hager of Banco left for their home in Big Creek Monday.

Charlie Stone of Blair was the all-night guest of his parents Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Stone at this place last Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. John Vance and children motored to Hamlin in their new Ford last Tuesday.

J.A. Pardue and sister-in-law, Miss Sylvia Hinds, of Huntington motored to Banco last Sunday were the all-day guest of Mr. Pardue’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Pardue.

Rev. Jeffrey of Chapmanville was visiting his mother, Mrs. Minta Jeffrey, near Banco last week.

Spring Dale is getting livelier every day. W.M. Gullett has purchased a new truck to haul lumber.

Misses Hazel and Ruby Saunders spent the Fourth in Logan.

Miss Ollie and Mattie Varney and Irene Lunsford were calling in our town one evening last week.

H.F. Lucas, mother, and little sister Jeanne Eleanor returned from Nellis, W.Va., Monday. Mrs. Lucas reports her brother, C.A. Justice, who recently removed from Charleston hospital where he was operated on for appendicitis, is getting along nicely.

Mrs. Polly Ellis of Big Creek and Miss Cornell Chapman of Estep and Dr. Ferrell of Chapmanville were out motoring last Wednesday.

Luther Bias of Chapmanville sure does think a lot of the girls as he had three in his little Ford last Monday evening. Be careful, Bias. Don’t get too many. Someone might get jealous.

Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Lucas spent the Fourth of July with Mr. Lucas’ aunt, Mrs. Sarah Ferrell at Chapmanville.

Here we come with a rush and a bound,

No better news from Banco can be found.

Everybody around Banco is lively. A large crowd attended the singing sat this place Sunday.

H.F. Lucas and mother and little sister Jeanne motored to Nellis, W.Va., last Saturday to visit Mrs. Lucas’ brother who is in the Charleston hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. Crissie Simmons and children of Glasgow are the guests of Mrs. Simmons’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Perry of Vicker’s Branch.

Mrs. Rosa Ellis of Needmore left for Logan Sunday where she spent the Fourth.

Mrs. Ethel Ferrell and daughter of Estep were visiting Mrs. Jno. Hager on Ed Stone Branch last Sunday.

Basil Duty spent Saturday and Sunday in Logan.

John Vance has purchased a new model Ford.

Mr. and Mrs. Okey Justice and little daughter Alice are visiting Mr. Justice’s parents on Elm street this week.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Varney and children of Manbar were calling on Mr. and Mrs. Charles Duty at Spring Dale Saturday and Sunday.

Wonder what has become of Mr. Bias of Chapmanville that we never see him anymore?

Miss Clara Harmon spent Sunday on Elm street with Miss Marea Lucas. They enjoyed the evening playing music.

Rev. White of Henlawson delivered a delightful sermon in Banco last Sunday morning. A large audience attended. Those taking a part in the evening service were Rev. Gillenwater of Big Ugly, Rev. Elkins of Banco, and Rev. Vickers of Chapmanville.

Mrs. J.W. Miller of Big Ugly attended church at Banco Sunday and was the dinner guest of her brother, Howard Vanatter.

J.M. Harmon and Mrs. J.W. Harmon of Big Creek motored to Banco Sunday.

Earl Justice of Whitman was calling on homefolks on Elm Street Sunday.

Wonder how Hassel Vance and Basil Duty like Pumpkin Center?

Misses Eva Ellis of Ellis Fork and Edith Chapman attended church in Banco Saturday night and Sunday, and were all night guests of Mrs. E.C. Varney of Elm Street.

Luther Bias and Miss Ella Jane Toney of Chapmanville motored over to Pumpkin Center Tuesday.

Misses Mary and Jennie Thomas of Estep were shopping in Banco Tuesday evening.

Mrs. Ted Hager and Kathleen Hager were the dinner guests of Mrs. D.H. Harmon last week.

Misses Hazel Thomas and Nella Varney of Thomas Circle attended church at Banco Sunday and were the dinner guests of Miss Marea Lucas.

We are glad to note that Miss Myrtle Duty is improving.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pauley were calling on Mrs. Bell Queen Saturday and Sunday.

A singing service was given at the Banco school house last Sunday by Prof. Albert Estep of Limestone. A very good crowd attended. All reported an enjoyable day.

Mr. R.L. Lucas and daughter Beatrice of Pumpkin Center attended singing at Banco last Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ferrell and little son Johnnie returned to their home at Huntington last Sunday by motor after a few days visit with Mrs. Ferrell’s parents on Big Ugly.

Wonder why Jesse Justice was looking so downhearted last Sunday evening? She’s gone, Jess, but she’ll come back.

Misses Pearl Hager and Opal Workman were the evening guest of Miss Maria Lucas last Sunday.

Wonder whose girl Hassel Vance was flirting with last Sunday? Be careful Hassell. Seybert might get mad.

Peter Pinder was seen going through Banco last week enroute to Big Ugly.

Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Stone and Mrs. Lizzie Perdue and daughter, Louise, of Banco motored to West Hamlin last Sunday and all reported a very enjoyable day.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Baisden and children of Needmore were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Duty of Spring Dale last Tuesday.

We saw in last week’s letter from Shegon an item which read like this: “Fred Woolum sure does look sweet in his new straw stack.” We have a boy in our town whose name is Fred Woolum and he also has a new straw stack. Just ask the girls of Sutton. They will tell the rest.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Hager of this place was a business caller in Big Creek last week.

Miss Millie Lancaster, teacher of the Banco school left for her home in Martinsburg, W.Va., last week. She will be missed by her many friends.

Mrs. L.A. Ellis of Needmore is visiting friends and relatives in Logan this week.

H.F. Lucas and father motored to Big Creek last Sunday.

Miss Mary Thomas of Estep was a caller in Banco last Tuesday night.

Miss Inez Barker, president of the Young Peoples’ class of the Christian Sunday school, delightfully entertained the class at her home Saturday evening. Those present were: Lola Ferrell, Martha Dingess, Gladys Lowe, Bernice Ward, Beulah Ballard, Hazel Saunders, Ella Toney, Mabel Ferrell, Dr. Ferrell, Lemar Collins, Kyle Ballard, Burva Crace, Ernest Ward, Dallas Toney, Ward and Walter Ferrell, G.W. McCloud and Arnold Barker. All reported a wonderful time.

Rev. Screeds preached at the Christian church Sunday morning and Sunday evening.

Miss Ruby Saunders spent the week end at Big Creek.

Miss Bernice Ward entertained the Sunday school class at her home Saturday night. Those present were: Misses Ruby and Hazel Saunders, Beulah Ballard, Ella Mae Toney, Marie Lucas, Gladys Lowe, Inez Barker, Arnold Barker, Kyle Ballard, Ward Ferrell, Walter Ferrell, Lemar Collins, Fred and Jack Garrett, Wattie Workman, and Tracy Vickers. All reported a nice time.

Rev. Screeds of Omar preached at the Christian church Sunday forenoon and evening.

Miss Click spent Sunday in Henlawson.

William Thompson, son of Thomas P. and Judith (Farley) Thompson, was the husband of Elizabeth Lilly. Grantors Conley and Thompson were first cousins…and brothers-in-law.

OLD SOLDIERS MEET

Members of Camp Straton U.C.V. Hold Reunion at Chapmansville

EDITOR DEMOCRAT: The Confederate veterans of Camp Straton met at Chapmansville on last Saturday in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of their enlistment in the cause of the Southern Confederacy. They were met and greeted by Daniel Smoot and several others from our sister county of Boone, and Robert Lewis of Lincoln county. J.W. Harvey was also present. M.L. Campbell of the Soldier’s Home, at Richmond, Va., enjoyed the pleasure and opportunity on this memorable occasion to once more greet his old comrades of the Lost Cause.

They met, shook hands and greeted each other, and at times the writer could detect the tears in the eyes of these old veterans, which showed the true spirit of these old comrades as they talked of the days when they followed Lee and Jackson, Johnson and Longstreet and others of their immortal leaders in the battles of Gettysburg, Bull Run, Piedmont, Manassas Junction and many other of those famous battles which today stand in history as sentinels of one of the bloodiest and hardest fought wars in the history not only of this nation but of the world.

After forming line and roll call, to which there were comparatively so few to answer, they once more marched the streets of Chapmansville, where just fifty years before to a day they marched when full of life and vigor. But now their bent forms and halting steps mark most sadly the passing of time.

In Federal burying grounds alone, 359,284 soldiers lie, while countless thousands have been buried in plots at home. On the Confederate side doubtless as many more may be counted. What a pitiful sacrifice of blood, the young and strong and brave blood of the nation. Doubtless war stirs certain feelings and virtues into action that otherwise would lie dormant. Perhaps it settles certain questions not otherwise easily adjusted. But it is hard to think that an intelligent Christian nation should ever need to resort to it.

When the noon hour came the veterans marched to the home of Mr. John Ferrell, where refreshments and a fine dinner was served. They then marched to the center of the village, formed a hollow square and held a brief business session.

A committee of three was appointed to draft suitable resolutions to the memory of their deceased comrades. Hon. J.B. Wilkinson, C.E. Whitman and W.F. Butcher were appointed on this committee.

A committee of two was appointed to gather the names of the sons of all the veterans in Camp Straton, said list to be submitted at the next reunion, at which time they expect to organize the Sons of Veterans. C.E. Whitman of Logan and R.L. Stone of Big Creek were appointed on this committee.

A clerk was also appointed to keep the record of the Camp.

It was also suggested that the commandant get in communication with the Daughters of the Confederacy, and secure a cross of honor for each veteran of the Camp, which cross of honor is to be handed down to the oldest son as a souvenir.

After the business session, prayer was offered by Chaplain W.D. Garrett.

The people were entertained for some time by short and breezy speeches by the veterans and their sons, which were very much applauded and enjoyed by all.

We then enjoyed the song of the starting of the Logan volunteers, June 3, 1861, by the wife of a veteran.

The meeting then adjourned to meet at Logan on Saturday, October 7, 1911.

Confederate Reunion

Camp Straton of the Confederate veterans met in this city October 23, 1911, and had dinner at the Buskirk and Peck Hotels as the guests of Judge Wilkinson and Mrs. Vicie Nighbert.

The meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. by M.D. Stone, Commandant, and George Scaggs was elected to the office of Third Lieutenant. Motion carried unanimously to meet hereafter on the fourth Tuesday in September, and Logan was chosen as the place for the next meeting.

Judge Wilkinson delivered an able address at the close of the business meeting and suggested organizing a camp of Sons of Veterans, a meeting for which purpose has been called for Saturday, Nov. 4th, at 1:30 p.m., at the court house.

United States Senator William E. Chilton then delivered a very interesting address which was received with great enthusiasm.

After a vote of thanks by the Company to Judge Wilkinson and Mrs. Nighbert for their hospitality the meeting was adjourned.

Confederate Reunion

Camp Stratton, No. 1633, United Confederate Veterans, met in the City of Logan, Tuesday, September 19th, according to arrangements made at their last meeting, October 23, 1911, making the third Tuesday in September of each ensuing year the regular meeting day at Logan.

The veterans coming east were met at the depot on the arrival of train No. 150 by the veterans already assembled, accompanied by the Logan and Holden bands.

Hon. J.B. Wilkinson announced that arrangements had been made for the veterans to march to the skating rink, where the business session would be held, after which dinner would be served to all veterans at the hotels Jefferson and Buskirk, complimentary tickets having been given to confederates and their wives and daughters present.

The meeting adjourned to meet at 12:30 p.m. at the court house where the Sons of Veterans and the teachers and pupils of the Logan Public Schools fell in line and marched through the business section of the city. The entire procession again marched to the skating rink and was ably entertained for a short time by Hon. J.B. Wilkinson, who in turn introduced Brig. Gen. Wayne B. Ferguson of the 2nd Division of West Virginia, U.C.V., who after delivering an interesting address introduced the Hon. Thos. H. Harvey of Huntington. Amid great applause, Judge Harvey recalled the story days of the Sixties and as a closing remark to his comrades, who must soon follow the great leader, quoted Jackson, “Let us pass over the river and rest under the shade of the trees.” Col. J.R. Miller, a “rebel” from the “Southland” was next introduced by Judge Wilkinson, who remarked that “the best of the reunion was now coming.” Col. Miller delivered an able and interesting address lasting 45 minutes, which was enjoyed by all present.

On motion Comrades Hugh Avis, Andy Perry, Simpson Ellis, Henry Mitchell and Thos. H. Harvey were selected as delegates to represent Camp Straton at the annual reunion in Moorefield, Hardy county, W.Va., October 9, 1912.

On motion Col. J.R. Miller, Hon. Thomas H. Harvey and Gen. Wayne B. Ferguson were made honorary members of this camp.

Mrs. J.E. Robertson and Mrs. Lou G. Buffington were unanimously extended a vote of thanks for their untiring efforts in securing … mandant, a vote of thanks was given to all visiting members, also all Sons of Veterans and Daughters United Confederacy.

After a vote of thanks by the Company to Judge Wilkinson and Mrs. Nighbert for their kind hospitality the meeting adjourned to meet at Logan, September 16th, 1913.

An unknown correspondent from Harts in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on January 14, 1927:

After all the sadness and sorrow Harts has mingled back again.

Mrs. Ward Brumfield met the county court at Hamlin Monday to be appointed Ward Brumfield’s administrator.

Mrs. Charles Brumfield is looking after business matters in Logan this week.

Miss Cora Adkins spent Saturday in Huntington.

Herbert Adkins was a business caller in Huntington Monday.

Mrs. Hollena Ferguson spent several days in Logan visiting friends.

Hawkins Perry is our new operator here this week.

Mrs. Toney Johnson from New Orleans is here visiting her mother, Mrs. Chas. Brumfield.

Wonder why Dr. Ferrell of Chapmanville is so interested in Harts now?

Mr. and Mrs. Dallas McComas spent Saturday and Sunday in Huntington.

Mrs. Beatrice Adkins from West Fork was in Harts Saturday.

Miss Jessie Brumfield is progressing nicely with her school at Atenville now.

Bill Adkins will leave here soon for Valparaiso, Indiana where he will be engaged in school for some time.

Mrs. Jeff Mullins of Big Creek spent Saturday visiting relatives here.

Robert Dingess of Whirlwind was a business caller in this town Monday.

Robert and Joe Brumfield are looking after business matters in Logan this week.

Fisher B. Adkins was in Hamlin Monday looking after his contest which will come off the March term of court.

Mrs. Herbert Adkins has purchased a fine radio.

Tom Brumfield seems to be very much pleased these days. Wonder why? Guess the wedding bells will ring soon.

Bill Adkins from Coal Branch City was in town Monday.
