An unknown correspondent from Whirlwind in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on December 18, 1914:

We are glad to note that our people are busy, happy and peaceful in these parts.

Will Farley has added a new industry to our town, a gasoline grist mill.

Our drummer, Sol Riddle, has just returned from a trip through his territory.

Revs. Adams and Fry preached at Head of Heart last Sunday.

Mrs. Vinson Collins is very ill at this writing.

Joe Blaine has moved from this place to Holden.

Forest fires are very frequent here of late.

Rev. Charley Curry was elected pastor of the church at McCloud school house recently.

Revs. Border and Vance will preach at McCloud school house the second Sunday.

Luke Curry has returned home from Rum, where he has been working for some time.

Cholera has been raging among the hogs in this vicinity. Several people have lost hogs.

John Workman will move back to his farm in the spring, he says.

The following list of Logan County marriages for 1890 reveals the names of preachers operating in the Harts Creek area. This is a “working list” and will be updated. The source for this material is “Marriages-Births-Deaths, 1872-1892,” pages 62-64, which is located at the Logan County Clerk’s Office in Logan, WV. Many thanks to the county clerks and their employees who have always been so helpful to my research these past twenty-five years. “J.M.,” a local correspondent at Whirlwind in Upper Hart, Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on Friday, December 29, 1911:

Coal digging is all the go at Whirlwind.

John Mullins, of Trace was in town Friday.

Mrs. Geo. Bryant was calling at Whirlwind, Friday.

Richard Collins passed through the city one day since.

Quite a crowd attended church, near Dingess, last Sunday.

James Mullins is the champion photographer at Whirlwind.

S. Riddell made a business trip down to Hart, Saturday.

James Mullins was transacting business on 12 Pole, Sunday.

Mrs. Mike Kinser was among the Whirlwind visitors Friday.

Miss Tenia Adams called on Mrs. S. Riddle, Thursday.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lowe, Saturday night, a girl baby.

Mr. Lee Ward, of Nelsonville, O., is visiting his brother here.

Crockett Farley is the mail carrier from Whirlwind to Dingess.

Mr. Fall has returned from North Carolina after a month’s trip.

M. Tomblin is furnishing the Whirlwind people with coal this winter.

Thomas Carter paid Miss Maggie Preece a visit one day last week.

John Collins made a business trip to Whirlwind, Friday. James Mullins was also here the same day.

Vinson Collins and Moses Tomblin are opening a new coal mine on Bulwark Creek, at this time, Nov. 30.

“Blue Eyed Beauty,” a local correspondent at Whirlwind in Upper Hart, Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Democrat printed on Thursday, April 3, 1919:

Rev. David Frye and Pat Atkins failed to fill their appointments for church at Bulwark Sunday, disappointing a large number.

Lindsey Blair had a chopping Tuesday.

Vinson Collins and Henry Hensley bought a load of potatoes of C.B. Riddle Monday.

Grover Adams bought a colt of Lindsey Blair Sunday.

Anderson Dempsey bought a cow of Sid Bryant Friday.

Millard Baisden bought a wagon load of potatoes of Mrs. E.B. Riddle Friday.

Mrs. Hallie Tomblin visited with homefolks Sunday.

Charles Curry failed to fill his appointment to preach at Browns Run Sunday.

The United States marshals made a raid on Twelvepole last week, capturing some moonshine and one deserter, Lewis Vance. Vance ran away from Camp Lee in December, 1917, and had been dodging the officers ever since.

The farmers of this section were visited by a small forest fire the middle of the week. It started Tuesday evening when David Frye was burning some litter off a field, and the blaze burned a few panels of fence for him. The fire spread rapidly around the head of Twelvepole, Island Creek and Harts Creek, and was finally stopped by rain on Thursday night.

Alexander Tomblin, of Holden, was visiting on Harts Creek Saturday and Sunday.

“Blue Eyed Beauty,” a local correspondent at Whirlwind in Upper Hart, Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Democrat printed on Thursday, February 6, 1919:

Vinson Collins and Mrs. Martha Spry were united in marriage Saturday night, the Rev. Sam Adkins officiating.

The death angel visited Smokehouse Monday night, claiming Charles Conley as its victim. Death was due to influenza.

Raymond Collins died at his home on Mud Monday and his body was brought here for burial Wednesday. This is the second child of Preston Collins to die since the first of the year. We hear another child of the family is in a very critical condition at this time. The influenza has been the cause of all the sickness and the deaths.

Reece Dalton and William Tomblin hauled a load of household furniture Friday for Doke Tomblin, who is moving here from Shamrock.

Bill Tomblin has been on the sick list this week, but is much improved at this writing.

Constable Peter Mullins arrested Jesse Blair Wednesday on a warrant charging him with having disturbed a religious service. The alleged offense is said to have occurred last July, before Jesse went to the army.
