From “Hardesty’s History of Lincoln County, West Virginia,” published by H.H. Hardesty, we find this entry for Isham Roberts, who resided at Hart in Lincoln County, West Virginia:

Son of Isham and Dicie (Roberts) Collins, was born in Martin county, Kentucky, in 1861, and settled in Lincoln county in 1877. His mother resides in this county, but his father is in Minnesota. Isham Roberts was united in the holy bonds of matrimony, in Lincoln county in 1883, with Martha J. Brumfield. She was born in 1865, and her parents, Paris and Annie (Toney) Brumfield, are natives of this county. Mr. Roberts is a prosperous young merchant in Hart Creek district, having his business headquarters on Guyan river, at the mouth of Big Hart creek. His prices are the most reasonable and the business very extensive. Hart, Lincoln county, West Virginia, is the post office address of Isham Roberts, Jr.

Georgia Brumfield and Earl Brumfield 2

Georgia (Thompson) Brumfield, wife of Hendricks Brumfield, with son, Earl Brumfield, in Harts, Lincoln County, WV. Earl (1914-1996), who became a school teacher in Lincoln and Cabell counties, was a good friend to me. I enjoyed visiting him at his Barboursville home in 1994-95; his father was a first cousin to my great-grandmother, Eva (Brumfield) Kirk.

From “Hardesty’s History of Lincoln County, West Virginia,” published by H.H. Hardesty, we find this entry for John H. Napier, who resided at Hart in Lincoln County, West Virginia:

A son of Robert and Mary (Osburn) Napier, residents of Wayne county, West Virginia, was born in that county, August 22, 1843, and came to Lincoln county in 1879. He wedded Julia A. Ross, a native of Wayne county, born March 24, 1850, the marriage ceremony having taken place in that county June 4, 1865. The birth record of the six children of Mr. and Mrs. Napier is: James M.., born April 4, 1867; Robert L., February 11, 1870; Thomas B., March 4, 1863; Mary, June 14, 1875; Maria J., April 14, 1878; Tennessee, January 31, 1881. James M. and Nettie (Adkins) Ross, residents of Wayne county, are the parents of Mrs. Napier. John H. Napier was at one time superintendent of free schools in Wayne county. He was a faithful soldier in the late war, serving in the Confederate army. Mr. Napier is a prosperous merchant in Hart Creek district, with business headquarters at the mouth of the creek. He also owns 100 acres of good land in Wayne county. John H. Napier may be addressed at  Hart, Lincoln county, West Virginia.

From “Hardesty’s History of Lincoln County, West Virginia,” published by H.H. Hardesty, we find this entry for James P. Mullins, who resided at Big Branch of Harts Creek in Lincoln County, West Virginia:

Came to Lincoln county in 1877, and now owns 250 acres of fine farming land on Hart creek. The farm has good improvements, and a large orchard. Mr. Mullins was born in Kentucky in 1848, and he is a son of James P. and Dorcas (Mullins) Mullins, residents of Boone county, West Virginia. Elizabeth J., daughter of Isham and Dicy (Johnson) Collins, was born in Kentucky, October 5, 1855, and in Buchanan county, Virginia, May 25, 1872, she became the wife of James P. Mullins. Five children are the result of their union: Mary J., born October 5, 1873; Victoria, April 23, 1876; Albert, July 18, 1877; Minnie B., July 1, 1879; James A., November 13, 1883. Mr. Mullins is a man of good business qualifications, and is prosperously engaged in merchandising, with business headquarters on Hart creek, one and one-half miles from its mouth. He may be addressed at Hart, Lincoln county, West Virginia.

Here I come again with news from Harts.

Georgia Curry and Roxie Tomblin were the guests of Mrs. Willie Browning Sunday.

Russell Curry and John Dalton were guests of Chas. Curry, Sunday.

John Dalton was calling on Miss Georgia Curry, Sunday evening.

Nora Browning was visiting her aunt Lizzie Tomblin Monday.

Russell Curry, Georgia Curry, and Roxie Tomblin took a joy ride Sunday evening.

Daily sights–Georgia and her pink hat; Roxie and her purple hat; Roxie and her hat going to Huntington.

Robert L. Dingess is going to close his school at Thompson Branch May 1st. Everybody is invited and are expecting to have a big time.

John Dalton was calling on Josephine Robinson Sunday.

From “Hardesty’s History of Lincoln County, West Virginia,” published by H.H. Hardesty, we find this entry for William T. Fowler, who resided at Hart in Lincoln County, West Virginia:

Is a merchant, miller and farmer in Harts Creek district, with business headquarters on Guyan river at the mouth of that creek. He was born in Kanawha county, (now) West Virginia, at the mouth of Burning Spring Hollow, June 29, 1825, and his parents, Thomas and Elizabeth (Gillispie) Fowler, are both now deceased. William T. Fowler has been twice married, his first wife Polly Emerine, left him three children, born as follows: Zattoo D., March 28, 1851; Polly A., December 25, 1853; William E., September 15, 1856. In Cabell county, West Virginia, June 10, 1871, W.T. Fowler and Martha A. Adkins were united wedlock, and the children born of this union are: Bettie, May 6, 1875; Effie, June 10, 1876; Benjamin F., December 15, 1878; George W., June 30, 1880. Mrs. Fowler is a native of Cabell county, born December 15, 1839, and her parents are John B. and Elizabeth (Childers) Adkins. Her mother still resides in that county; her father died April 1876. Mr. Fowler enlisted in the Civil War in 1862, serving on the Confederate side, and was a participant in the Chapmansville battle. William T. Fowler settled in Lincoln county in 1847, and now owns 200 acres of land at the mouth of Big Hart creek, and 254 acres on Mud river. That situated on Hart creek produces well, and has a good orchard and a part is heavily timbered with oak, poplar and pine; coal and iron ore are quite abundant. The land on Mud river is heavily timbered. Address, Hart, Lincoln county, West Virginia.

From “Hardesty’s History of Lincoln County, West Virginia,” published by H.H. Hardesty, we find this entry for William Floyd Elkins, who resided at Fourteen Mile Creek in Lincoln County, West Virginia:

Is a son of Overton and Nancy Ferguson (Estep) Elkins, who lived here at the formation of Lincoln county, and he was born in Cabell county, May 2, 1856. December 26, 1872, the Rev. John Stephens joined in wedlock, W.F. Elkins and Sarah, daughter of Alexander and Matilda Farley Dalton. Mrs. Elkins died October 15, 1875, leaving one child, Sylvanus, born October 9, 1873. In Lincoln county, July 13, 1876, Elizabeth Dennison Estep, daughter of Corbin and Bithenia Crocket (Elkins) Estep, became the wife of William Floyd Elkins, and to them one son has been given: William Overton, July 25, 1880. Elizabeth D. Elkins was born in Lawrence county, Kentucky, January 25, 1861, and came to Lincoln county with her parents in 1867. Richard Elkins, great-grandfather of William, came to the mouth of Big Hart creek, in the year 1816, and settled there, raising a large family of children, who are scattered throughout Hart Creek district. William Floyd Elkins is a farmer in this district, owning 45 acres of land on Fourteen-mile creek, 20 acres of which is cultivated. The land is well timbered and coal and iron ore abound quite largely, and there is upon the farm a lead mine, which makes the land more valuable. His post office address is Fourteen, Lincoln county, West Virginia.

An unknown local correspondent from Harts in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on February 26, 1926:

Several boys and girls of this place attended singing school at Coal Branch Sunday.

Dr. Ferrell and Cora Adkins were calling on friends at Sand Creek last Saturday evening.

Miss Jewell Brumfield attended Sunday school at Gill Sunday and was accompanied by Sylvia Ciphers and Hawkins Perry.

J.C. McEldowney of Charleston was calling on friends and relatives at Harts Saturday.

Chas. Brumfield was a business caller in Huntington Saturday.

Ward Brumfield was transacting business in Hamlin Saturday.

Blanch, Anna and Laura Lambert were visiting friends in Harts Wednesday.

Hardin Marcum was calling on Shirlie Adkins at West Hamlin Sunday.

Hendrix Brumfield attended singing at Coal Branch Sunday and reported there were over fifty singers present and the singing was progressing nicely.

Every body is planning to hunt Easter eggs here.

Mrs. C.C. Pack and daughter, Miss May, were visiting relatives in Logan Saturday and Sunday.

Enos Dials spent Sunday in Huntington.

Daily Happenings: Bob Hendrix meeting the train; Ward with the tax books; Watson with his pipe; Herb in the garage; Nora and Jewell teaching school; Bessie and Cora in the store; Aunt Cathrine with her hair; Sadie with her glasses on; Luther in his old rattle trap; Wesley reading the newspaper; Fred, the law maker.

The primary source for this material is Deed Book D, which is located at the Logan County Clerk’s Office in Logan, WV. Material is arranged based on the grantor’s name as given in the deed, the grantee’s name as given in the deed, and the date of the deed. Some of the deeds are partially destroyed, obscuring dates. Public Papers of Governor A.B. Fleming of West Virginia, February 6, 1890 to March 4, 1893 (Charleston, WV: Moses W. Donnally, Public Printer, 1893).

“Isaiah Mullins, convicted in the circuit court of Lincoln county, August term, 1891, of unlawful cutting and sentenced to one year’s confinement in the penitentiary. Pardoned December 8, 1891, for reasons entered in the pardon record as follows: The application for pardon is supported by the recommendation of the Hon. Thos. H. Harvey, the judge who presided at the trial, and who says: ‘This man Mullins, when sober, is represented as quiet and peaceable and tries to provide for his family, which, I understand is quite large, and who are now in very needy circumstances, depending largely on the assistance of neighbors and friends. I am inclined to believe it would now be a mercy to his little children to exercise the Executive clemency, and pardon him, which I respectfully recommend.’ The prosecuting attorney, clerk of circuit court, and nine of the jurors, also ask for the prisoner’s release.” (p. 96-97)

“John Brumfield, convicted in the circuit court of Lincoln county, February term, 1892, of unlawful shooting, and sentenced to confinement in the penitentiary for two years. Pardon granted November 21, 1892, for reasons entered in the pardon record as follows: It appears that the prisoner was but fifteen years of age at the time of the commission of the offense. The petition for pardon is supported by the recommendation of the Hon. Thos. H. Harvey, the judge who sentenced the prisoner; by Rome Lambert, the person who was shot; by Wade Lambert, the father of the injured party; by most of the persons who witnessed the difficulty; by the prosecuting attorney; and a large number of citizens.” (p. 103)
