“Revolutionary John” Mullins, sometimes nicknamed “Buttin’ John,” is buried near the intersection of Mullins Avenue and McClure Street in Clintwood, Dickenson County, VA. To reach his grave, park at Johnson’s Chevrolet on McClure Street and walk up the hill. Signs will direct you to the cemetery. 25 August 2018.

Dickenson County Courthouse in Clintwood, VA. THIS IS MULLINS COUNTRY. Placed at its front is a large plaque commemorating John Mullins, Sr. (father to “Holly Creek John”), who served in the Revolutionary War. 25 August 2018.

Holly Creek John Mullins Historic Marker

“Holly Creek John” received his nickname because he settled on Holly Creek, near the courthouse. Clintwood is located in the head of Holly Creek.

Behind the Clintwood Baptist Church on High Street is the grave of “Holly Creek John” Mullins, son of John and Jane (Bailey) Mullins. There’s really no place to park along this narrow street, so you have to park at the Sleep Inn and Suites Hotel and walk back up the hill just a bit. 25 August 2018.

The primary source for this material is “Commissioner’s Record of Destroyed Title Papers 2,” which is located at the Lincoln County Clerk’s Office in Hamlin, WV. Material is arranged based on the person’s name as given in the deed, the date of the deed, and the date of the deed’s acknowledgment by a JP. I have also found JPs listed in Deed Book 50, 51, 52, 54, 55, 56, and 60. Deed Book “S” at the Logan County Clerk’s Office as well as numerous records in the Logan County Circuit Clerk’s Office have also provided information. Quite a crowd attended church, near Dingess, last Sunday.

James Mullins is the champion photographer at Whirlwind.

S. Riddell made a business trip down to Hart, Saturday.

James Mullins was transacting business on 12 Pole, Sunday.

Mrs. Mike Kinser was among the Whirlwind visitors Friday.

Miss Tenia Adams called on Mrs. S. Riddle, Thursday.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Lowe, Saturday night, a girl baby.

Mr. Lee Ward, of Nelsonville, O., is visiting his brother here.

Crockett Farley is the mail carrier from Whirlwind to Dingess.

Mr. Fall has returned from North Carolina after a month’s trip.

M. Tomblin is furnishing the Whirlwind people with coal this winter.

Thomas Carter paid Miss Maggie Preece a visit one day last week.

John Collins made a business trip to Whirlwind, Friday. James Mullins was also here the same day.

Vinson Collins and Moses Tomblin are opening a new coal mine on Bulwark Creek, at this time, Nov. 30.

“Golden Rod,” a local correspondent from Big Ugly Creek in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Lincoln Monitor printed on Thursday, March 19, 1914:

Clinton Ferrell, Milton Ferrell, Jeff Miller, and a number of other members from this community attended the regular weekly meeting of the Red Men at Toney this week.

Keenan Toney, one of our very best farmers is kept busy these days looking after a bunch of about 130 head of fine calves.

John Bell is very ill with pneumonia. This makes the fourth attack which the young man has had of this malady.

Albert Ferrell has just returned home from Hamlin where he served on the petit jury at the recent term of circuit court.

The oil well drillers on Big Left Hand Branch have gone down about 1400 feet to date.

John Mullins has moved to the Philip Hager place at the mouth of Big Sulphur. Mr. Mullins is making the old place shine.

Milton Ferrell and boys are sowing their tobacco beds this week.
