Green Shoal (WV) Post Office

Green Shoal Creek is a tributary of the Guyandotte River located in Harts Creek District of Lincoln County, West Virginia. Prior to 1863, the stream was located in Virginia, and prior to 1869, it was located in Logan County. Today, it is situated on Route 10 between the communities of Ferrellsburg and Toney. Prior to the Civil War, Green Shoal was a sort of community hub for the Harts Creek area. Green Shoal had the first post office located in the Harts area.

Green Shoal Post Office was established on January 4, 1855. It was discontinued on July 9, 1866. Burbus C. Toney, son of Squire and Nancy (Brown) Toney, was postmaster from 1855 to 1866.

Green Shoal Post Office was re-established on November 25, 1873. Admiral S. Fry, a Confederate veteran and merchant, served as postmaster until November 1, 1878. Kale Steele served as postmaster until November 17, 1879. The post office was discontinued on November 17, 1879.

Greenshoal Post Office was established on December 20, 1899. James H. McComas served as postmaster until April 5, 1901. According to one period newspaper account, C. Brumfield replaced McComas on April 2, 1901. Official records cite McComas as postmaster until December 22, 1902. George W. Ferrell, adopted son of local merchants, served as postmaster from December 22, 1902 until December 27, 1904. At this latter date, the post office was discontinued to Ferrellsburg.

In the twentieth century, the Green Shoal area was called “Fry.”

An unnamed local correspondent from Big Creek in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Lincoln Republican printed on Thursday, April 5, 1923:

Uncle Hub Vance is suffering from the flu.

Miss Mary Sanders attended Federal Court in Huntington the past week.

Miss Hoaner Ferrell has returned from Parkersburg, where she has been attending Mountain State Business College.

Miss Dixie Toney was the guest of Mrs. Clyde W. Peters, of Huntington the past week.

Miss Cora M. Adkins, the popular teacher, was in Huntington the past week making arrangements to attend Marshall College.

Miss Birdie Linville was calling on friends at Toney, Sunday.

Miss Ida Lucas, who has a position with the First National Bank of Huntington, was here recently enroute to her home on Big Creek.

Mr. K.E. Toney is in Logan this week on matters of business.

Mr. John Thompson, of the Hunt-Forbes Cons. Co., was in town today. He reports that the Company’s contract in Harts Creek district will be completed within one month.

M.D. Bledsew was a recent visitor in Williamson.

J.W. Stowers, merchant of Ferrellsburg, was a recent visitor of his sister, Mrs. Ward Lucas, of this place.

Roy Anderson, Chief Clerk in the Logan Assessor’s office was the Sunday guest of K.E. Toney.

Elbert Baisden has been appointed Asst. Supt. of the Daisy Coal Co.

Miss Hazel Toney will complete her business course at the Capitol City Commercial College about April 15th, and will, we are informed be employed in the Sheriff’s office in Logan.

Miss Maud Gill’s school closed last Friday. Miss Gill is a fine teacher and met with great success in her work this year.

Miss Maud Ellis, of Logan, was the recent guest of Mrs. Ella Baisden.

Tracy Baird just returned from Barboursville.

John B. Toney was a business caller at Leet Monday.

John Bell is very ill with pneumonia. Little hopes are entertained for his recovery.

Miss Rosa Ferrell visited homefolks Saturday and Sunday from Estep.

Miss Allie Gillenwater paid her uncle, Wirt Toney, a visit Saturday night and Sunday.

Miss Junie Fry and Della Ferrell were the guests of their cousin Dollie Toney Saturday and Sunday.

Mrs. John Hunter was shopping in Rector Monday.

Miss Myrtle Toney was the guest of her brother John Toney Monday.

Misses Mary, Maude and Kizzie Toney were on Left Hand Branch the past week to see the gas well.

Curtis Haven of Holden is visiting his uncle Thomas Vannatter.
