An unknown correspondent from Banco on Big Creek in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on August 17, 1926:

Just a few items from the busy town of Banco.

Everybody is rushing to get started up Guyan river with peddling loads. We wish them success.

Several from Banco attended church at Thomas’ Circle Saturday night and Sunday.

Charley Garrett of Curry is right on his job this week. Stay with it Charley. Winter is coming and then there will be plenty of I-C-E.

Among those who were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Varney last Sunday were: Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Thomas and daughter Jennie and little nephew Master Willard Varney, Walton Garrett and daughter Susie of Curry, Misses Marea Lucas and Clara Harmon.

Mrs. C.E. Justice and son Charles of Elm street have been visiting Mrs. Justice’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Fugate of Holt.

Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Ellis and children of Ramage were the dinner guests of Miss Anna Justice of Elm street last Sunday.

Listen, girls! You need not be afraid to go joyriding with Hassel Vance in his new car. He is a very careful driver.

Those who were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Thomas at Thomas’ Circle last Sunday were: Mr. and Mrs. B.E. Ferrell and daughter Ruth, the Rev. White of Henlawson, J.A. Thomas and son Virgil of Estep, Misses Kathleen Hager of Banco, and Daisy Garrett of Curry.

Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Hager and small daughter Carmine were the guests of Mr. Hager’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Hager.

Mr. and Mrs. W.H. McKinney of Crites have been visiting Mrs. McKinney’s father, F.D. Lucas of Trace Fork, who has been ill for some time.

W.F. Lucas and calling at the Banco post office last Tuesday afternoon. He must have been expecting a letter from Braxton county.

An unknown correspondent from Banco on Big Creek in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on August 6, 1926:

Banco is getting livelier every day. One can look out just any time and see an ice truck, lumber truck or furniture truck. We are sure glad to see our town so rapidly improving.

Charles Garrett of Curry, our ice man, will turn a cold shoulder on all the girls on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week.

Miss Pearl Hager of this place is spending the week with her brother, C.L. Hager at Stone Branch.

Misses Clara Harmon and Marea Lucas were the Sunday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Lucas.

Jesse Justice of Elm Street was calling on his old girl at Manila last Sunday.

Charlie Stone, small son and daughter and Ruby May, Bill Butcher, Ruby Sanders and Tiny Chafin motored to Banco Wednesday evening.

H.F. Lucas and sister Marea of Elm Street motored to Manila last Saturday, attended church and were the all-night guests of their aunt, Mary Jane Drake.

J.M. Harmon and W.J. Vance of Peach Creek motored through Banco last Monday.

F.L. Estep of this place made a business call in Estep last Wednesday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Son Ball and baby of Hewitt have been visiting Mrs. Ball’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Pardee, at this place this week.

Aunt Rispa Stone has returned to her home on Ed Stone Branch. She has been absent from this place for some time. Her entire family and all her friends were glad to see her back again.

Mrs. Etta Thomas and daughter Hazel of Thomas Circle were Wednesday night guests of Mrs. Thomas’ daughter, Mrs. Grayce McComas, at Daisy.

Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Lucas motored to Chapmanville last Tuesday where they attended the primary.

Wonder what has become of Basil Duty? We haven’t seen him in town for two or three days. There must be some attraction on Lynn Street.

Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Queen of Logan motored through Banco last Sunday enroute to Needmore.

Among those who attended church at the Lane church from Banco last Sunday were: Mr. and Mrs. John Hager and daughter, Pearl, Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Adkins, Charlie Duty and son, Basil, B.R. Lucas, H.F. Lucas and Jesse Justice and Misses Marea Lucas and Clara Harmon.

J.A. Stone bid Banco adieu Tuesday and left for Blair, where he will take an interest in the Stone Bros. store.

Basil Duty is touring the meanders of Guyan river in a huckster truck this week.

J.P. Mullins of Danville and Mr. Granville Mullens of Big Creek were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Harmon Saturday.

Mrs. Freddie Lunsford and Mrs. Ida Hager of Big Creek were berry picking on the Ed Stone Branch Tuesday and were the dinner guests of Mrs. John Hager.

Rev. White of Henlawson was calling in our town early last Wednesday.

A very shocking tragedy occurred on Big Ugly Sunday night when Lon Vanatter was shot and killed instantly at his home just after dark. He is survived by a wife and several children his mother and father. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Vanatter and a great many relatives.

Gardner Baisden was transferring Fraud Estep’s furniture from Estep to Banco Tuesday. Wonder if he saw his sweetie when he passed Thomas’ Circle?

Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Varney and daughter made a business trip to Big Creek last week.

Miss Nelle Varney of Thomas Circle was shopping in our town Wednesday.

Miss Ruby Sanders returned to her  home here Monday evening after several days spent in Barboursville and Huntington, accompanied by her cousin, Miss Tiny Chafin.

H.F. Lucas motored to the mouth of Trace Fork Tuesday to pick berries. Stay with it, H.F. The berries will soon be gone.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Varney and children of Thomas Circle attended the singing school at Banco last Sunday conducted by Prof. Albert Estep of Limestone.

Mr. and Mrs. T.D. Butcher and children of Wilkinson motored through Banco Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Hager of Banco left for their home in Big Creek Monday.

Charlie Stone of Blair was the all-night guest of his parents Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Stone at this place last Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. John Vance and children motored to Hamlin in their new Ford last Tuesday.

J.A. Pardue and sister-in-law, Miss Sylvia Hinds, of Huntington motored to Banco last Sunday were the all-day guest of Mr. Pardue’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Pardue.

Rev. Jeffrey of Chapmanville was visiting his mother, Mrs. Minta Jeffrey, near Banco last week.

Spring Dale is getting livelier every day. W.M. Gullett has purchased a new truck to haul lumber.

Misses Hazel and Ruby Saunders spent the Fourth in Logan.

Miss Ollie and Mattie Varney and Irene Lunsford were calling in our town one evening last week.

H.F. Lucas, mother, and little sister Jeanne Eleanor returned from Nellis, W.Va., Monday. Mrs. Lucas reports her brother, C.A. Justice, who recently removed from Charleston hospital where he was operated on for appendicitis, is getting along nicely.

Mrs. Polly Ellis of Big Creek and Miss Cornell Chapman of Estep and Dr. Ferrell of Chapmanville were out motoring last Wednesday.

Luther Bias of Chapmanville sure does think a lot of the girls as he had three in his little Ford last Monday evening. Be careful, Bias. Don’t get too many. Someone might get jealous.

Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Lucas spent the Fourth of July with Mr. Lucas’ aunt, Mrs. Sarah Ferrell at Chapmanville.

Rev. White of Henlawson delivered a delightful sermon in Banco last Sunday morning. A large audience attended. Those taking a part in the evening service were Rev. Gillenwater of Big Ugly, Rev. Elkins of Banco, and Rev. Vickers of Chapmanville.

Mrs. J.W. Miller of Big Ugly attended church at Banco Sunday and was the dinner guest of her brother, Howard Vanatter.

J.M. Harmon and Mrs. J.W. Harmon of Big Creek motored to Banco Sunday.

Earl Justice of Whitman was calling on homefolks on Elm Street Sunday.

Wonder how Hassel Vance and Basil Duty like Pumpkin Center?

Misses Eva Ellis of Ellis Fork and Edith Chapman attended church in Banco Saturday night and Sunday, and were all night guests of Mrs. E.C. Varney of Elm Street.

Luther Bias and Miss Ella Jane Toney of Chapmanville motored over to Pumpkin Center Tuesday.

Misses Mary and Jennie Thomas of Estep were shopping in Banco Tuesday evening.

Mrs. Ted Hager and Kathleen Hager were the dinner guests of Mrs. D.H. Harmon last week.

Misses Hazel Thomas and Nella Varney of Thomas Circle attended church at Banco Sunday and were the dinner guests of Miss Marea Lucas.

Gardner Baisden of Estep was in Banco Sunday.

H.F. Lucas and sister Marjory motored to Big Creek Saturday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Turner and children of Chapmanville were calling on Mrs. Turner’s father, who has been ill for some time.

A singing service was given at the Banco school house last Sunday by Prof. Albert Estep of Limestone. A very good crowd attended. All reported an enjoyable day.

Mr. R.L. Lucas and daughter Beatrice of Pumpkin Center attended singing at Banco last Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ferrell and little son Johnnie returned to their home at Huntington last Sunday by motor after a few days visit with Mrs. Ferrell’s parents on Big Ugly.

Wonder why Jesse Justice was looking so downhearted last Sunday evening? She’s gone, Jess, but she’ll come back.

Misses Pearl Hager and Opal Workman were the evening guest of Miss Maria Lucas last Sunday.

Wonder whose girl Hassel Vance was flirting with last Sunday? Be careful Hassell. Seybert might get mad.

Peter Pinder was seen going through Banco last week enroute to Big Ugly.

J.A. Stone returned to his home at Banco last Sunday after a few days in Huntington.

Fred Lowe of Kleenkoal who has been ill for a few weeks has returned to his home on Ed Stone Branch near Banco.

Mrs. Robert Chapman of Estep was a business caller in Banco last Tuesday.

Mr. Earl Justice of Whitman attended the singing school at Banco last Sunday and was also the guest of homefolks on Elm street.

Mrs. Polly Ellis of Big Creek, formerly of Estep, is visiting with her brother D.H. Harmon at Banco this week.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Hager of this place were calling in Big Creek last Sunday morning.

Mrs. Rosa Ellis of Needmore was the guest of Mrs. D.H. Harmon last Monday and Tuesday.

Frank Chapman returnred from Hamlin to his home in Estep via Banco last Monday. There must be some attractions up there, such as the beautiful milkmaids, etc.

Mr. H.F. Lucas made a flying trip to Chapmanville last Sunday evening. Wonder if he saw Tiny?

Mrs. D.H. Harmon and Mrs. J.W. Hager of this place were the guests of Mrs. J.A. Varney of Thomas Circle last Saturday and were served with a nice chicken dinner.

Hello, folks! Here we are again with a few items from our thriving little town.

Bernice Hunter returned from Hot Springs, Arkansas, last Monday and was the all night guest of his aunt, Mrs. John Hager, of Banco; then returned to his home on Big Ugly.

Mrs. V.P. Conley and little son, Joe, of Banco addition were calling on Mrs. D.H. Harmon of this place last Wednesday morning.

Hassel Vance is still driving the big team. Hauling from Spring Dale to Big Creek. Hassel doesn’t stop in Spring Dale very long even if there is some pretty girls in that town.

Wonder why Peter Pinder never calls in Banco any  more? We sure miss the great stories he used to tell us. We imagine he is telling the stories to his girl in Thomas’ Circle nowadays.

Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Vance’s small son, Junior, is still ill with measles, we are sorry to say.

Wonder when H.T. Lucas is going to make a call in Spring Dale? The roads are better to Spring Dale for joy riding, H.T., than they are to North Pole.

Mrs. Mary Hager and daughter Kathleen were calling on Mrs. D.H. Harmon last Sunday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Stone were calling on their daughter, Mrs. Jennie Thomas, at Estep last Sunday afternoon.

Miss Marea Lucas was the afternoon guest of Misses Ollie and Mattie Varney last Sunday.

Jesse Justice sure does like the little town of Estep, especially while his old girl from Slabtown is there.

Miss Susie Thomas and little brother, Virgil, of Estep have been visiting their grandparents at this place for a few days.

H.F. Lucas and his father were out trying H.F.’s Ford last Monday evening.

Mr. Joseph A. Varney and daughter Nella were business callers in Banco last Tuesday evening.

Misses Zella and Charlotte Chapman of Estep were shopping in Banco last Saturday.

Mrs. L.A. Ellis who is making her home in Needmore for a short while was visiting Mrs. Nancy Duty at Stone Branch last week.

We are sorry to say but the doll of Needmore has forsaken all the girls of their town, also the girls of Banco, as he left for Spencer, W.Va., one day last week.

Basil Duty of Spring Dale was calling in Estep last Sunday. Look out, boys. Some of you are going to lose your L.F.O. Basil means business. He’s looking for his affinity.

There will be church at the Banco school house next Saturday night and Sunday. Everybody is invited.

Well here we come with some more Banco news.

Everything is looking lively around Thomas Circle these days.

Gid Toney and Bessie Isaac were out walking Sunday.

Miss Onna Varney was seen at the Thomas store house Sunday. Wonder who she was looking for? Ask Bob. He will tell you.

Bob Jarrells and Bert Mullins were walking around the lonesome road Sunday.

Gardner Baisden and Don Estep were sure enjoying themselves Sunday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Varney were visiting relatives here Sunday.

Tom Duty of this place is seriously ill at this writing but is still walking the lonesome road.

Willie Thomas was a business caller in Banco last Saturday.

James Duty, who has been on the sick list, is improving nicely.

Charley Varney says that Mr. A.J. Thomas of Big Creek has sure supplied this place with wharf rats.

There were several boys of East End who enjoyed themselves eating boiled eggs at Thomas’ Circle Sunday.

Gardner Baisden seemed to be all smiles Sunday. Wonder what he was pleased over? Ask Hazel. She may tell you.

Mack Varney of Needmore was the guest of Bob Justice.

P.D. Bradbury and Oley Adkins were loading out telegraph poles this week.

Mrs. Vick Thomas of Big Creek has been making soap this week for her daughter, Brooke. Brooke has been on the sick list this week. Hope she will soon recover.

Wonder who Nella Varney was looking for Sunday? She was seen up on the hill.

Hope Tom Duty will get him a sweetie soon. He seems to be downhearted.

J.A. Thomas of Estep is getting ready to put up a broom factory. I hope he will succeed nicely.

J.A. Duty and brother R.F. Duty are farming heavy this year. They have about twenty acres of corn planted and expect to grow about twelve acres of tobacco. R.F. says he can’t work any this summer and he is going to give his job to J.A.

Etta Thomas of Thomas Circle has been on the sick list the last few days.

Carl Varney was visiting home folks.

An unknown local correspondent from Estep in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on May 14, 1926:

The boys of our town are hale and hearty and when they get the idea of looking for their “Better Half” the Estep boys certainly have the “pep.”

Gardner Baisden of Ellis attended church at Thomas Circle last Sunday. It is rumored that there are some other attractions in that town.

Among the many occurrences of the week, the most eventful occurred on last Sunday. Basil Harmon and Frank Chapman, both of Estep, were out horseback riding and when they saw an approaching automobile which they waved down and invited two of the girls out for a horse back ride. The girls complied to their wishes, so they all gallantly rode away.

Miss Charlotte Chapman returned to her home at Estep last Wednesday.

J.A. Thomas and J.W. Thomas of this place attended church at Thomas Circle last Sunday.

Rev. White of Henlawson delivered a very interesting sermon at the school house at Thomas’ Circle last Sunday morning. A good crowd from adjoining towns attended. Among those who attended church at Thomas’ Circle from Banco were: Mr. and Mrs. B.E. Ferrell, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Hager, Clara Harmon, Mr. B.R. Lucas and son H.F. Lucas.

Jesse Justice of Elm street went to Logan last Wednesday to have some dental work done. Jesse will go back to Springdale with a smile.

Mr. A.S. Lowe was a business caller in Banco last Wednesday.

Messrs. J.A. Stone and Samuel Pardue motored to Huntington last Sunday and arrived back in Banco Monday.

Clara Harmon of this place was the all night guest of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Lucas last Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Thomas of Estep were shoppers in Banco last Tuesday.

Mrs. Wallace Toney and children of Chapmanville was visiting Mrs. Toney’s father, Mr. F.D. Lucas on Trace Fork, who has been ill for some time.

Miss Effie Carter returned to her home at Milton after a week’s visit with her grandparents on North Fork.

Miss Ella Jane Toney of Chapmanville was the Sunday guest of Miss Maria Lucas of this place.

Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Justice and son Charles were business callers in Banco last Saturday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Lucas were calling in Banco last Sunday evening.

Robert Gullet of Spring Dale and Jesse Justice of Elm street seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely last Sunday afternoon as they had two girls in their roadster. Don’t tell Frank, boys.

Miss Opal Workman returned to her home in Banco after several days in Pumpkin Center.

Miss Angie Lucas was calling at the Banco post office last week. Wonder who she was looking for a letter from?

Everything is progressing nicely around our little town at present. The farmers greet each other with a cheery good morning and go about their work in a very pleasant mood.

Miss Edith Chapman of this place was shopping in Banco one day last week.

Miss Anna Ferrell who has been ill with measles is able to be out again.

Frank Chapman of this place thought his girl was true blue until the last week or two. He thinks now perhaps he may be color blind.

The girls of this town are wondering why Basil Duty is never on our streets any more. There must be some attraction in Spring Dale.

Miss Onnie Varney of Thomas Circle attended church at Slab Town last Sunday.

Miss Zella Chapman of Estep was calling in Banco last Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Stone of Banco was the Sunday guest of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Thomas at this place.

An unknown local correspondent from Banco in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on April 20, 1926:

The population of our town is steadily increasing. Mr. Enoch Workman of Stone Branch moved into East End last Friday.

Mrs. Ethel Ferrell of Estep and Mrs. Minnie Queen of Needmore were on a shopping tour in Banco and Big Creek one day last week.

The folks at this place are very busy at present caring for the sick, gardening, and farming. All the patients who have had measles are improving, we are glad to say.

Wonder why Frank Chapman spends every Sunday afternoon in the East End? We imagine there is some game up there. It must be “Dears.”

Miss Mary Thomas of this place left for Turtle Creek one day last week where she will spend a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Adlia Barker.

We are informed that Mr. and Mrs. Ola Adkins have moved back into the little town of Needmore. Mrs. Adkins’ work will consist mostly of farming for the summer.

Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Thomas of Estep were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Thomas, also of Estep, last Sunday afternoon.

Master Otis Varney, son of Ephraim Varney (deceased) of Thomas Circle, is reported to be very ill of measles this week.

Maxie Madeline Small, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Varney of Thomas Circle, is ill with measles this week, we are informed.

The South Penn Oil and Gas Company is making fine progress drilling for oil and gas at the head of Ellis Fork near this place.

Mr. Gartner Baisden and one of his girlfriends of Ellis Fork were out horseback riding last Saturday afternoon. Wonder if his girl at Logan will care?

J.W. Thomas of this place was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pauley of East End last Sunday afternoon.

Frank Chapman of Estep was a business visitor in Logan last Monday.

Here we come with some more news from Banco.

This cold weather is disheartening for the farmers. Cheer up, farmers. The sun will get across the line after while.

Tom Duty has been singing the “Lonesome Road Blues”. Cheer up, Tom. Ray Varney has left Banco.

Susan Duty has been seriously ill for the past week.

Oma Varney and her sister were out walking Sunday.

Louis Pauley was a business caller at Willie Thomas’ Monday.

Thomas Circle is looking lively these days as Willie Thomas and Charlie Varney are plowing and getting ready to raise burley.

Bert Mullins was a pleasant caller at Jim Duty’s last Sunday. Wonder what he was talking about? Ask Lula. She might tell you.

Mrs. Hattie Varney and daughter Mabel were shopping in Banco last Monday.

Mrs. J.B. Thomas of Big Creek has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Charlie Varney of Thomas Circle.

We are glad to say that Mrs. Varney’s little daughter Madeline is improving nicely of measles.

Tom Duty is looking pale these days. What is wrong, Tom? Has Bessie forsaken you?

I wonder what has become of Basil Duty? I never see him any more.

Nella Varney is getting ready to plant flowers this year.

Miss Hazel Thomas of this place celebrated her 17th birthday April 16th. Miss Thomas was presented with several presents and a fine dinner by her mother.

I wonder what has delayed our mail carrier today. Haven’t seen him yet.

An unknown local correspondent from Big Creek in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on April 9, 1926:

There are a great many sick people in our town at present. There has been about ten cases of measles in and near this place.

Frank Chapman of East End has a Sweetie somewhere in town. Wonder if any of the boys know who she is. She wears bobbed hair. You know the “Flapper Reigns.”

Some of our young folks visited Thomas’ Circle last Saturday, thinking that the school at that place closed that day, but it closed Friday.

Miss Ida Thomas of this place left for Earling last Thursday where she will assist in nursing her little cousin Master Robert Varney, Jr., who is very ill with measles.

Mrs. Alvin Hill of Ellis Fork is reported to be slowly convalescing after a long illness with measles.

Elbert Ferrell and J.A. Thomas of Estep have broken the record planting potatoes. They have planted nearly all of the Gince Hollow, a tributary of North Fork, near Estep.

Miss Edith Chapman of East End was seen going through this hamlet last Friday afternoon enroute for the town of Banco.

The school at Thomas’ Circle closed last Friday on account of measles.

Mrs. Woodrow Adkins died at her home on Big Ugly last Sunday of blood poisoning. Interment took place at the head of Turtle Creek at the Miller cemetery, near Mrs. Belle Miller’s.

The wedding vows were solemnized between Mr. Okey Justice of Banco and Miss Nola Drake of Manila last Sunday evening. Rev. Elijah Pauley officiating.

Rev. White of Henlawson was the pleasant guest of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Varney of Thomas’ Circle last Saturday night and Sunday. Everyone was expecting a good meeting at Thomas’ Circle last Sunday. On account of the epidemic of measles.

We wonder why the Sheik was walking the streets Sunday and Monday wearing the snappy tailored suit.

Mrs. Etta Thomas and daughter Hazel of Thomas Circle were visiting the former’s father Mr. Joseph Vickers last Sunday and Monday, who is very ill at this writing. Mr. Vickers is making his home at present with his daughter, Mrs. Walton Garrett of Curry.

Mrs. R.L. Lucas and children of Pumpkin Center were the pleasant guests of friends and relatives on Elm Street last Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Miss Ida Thomas of Maubar was the Sunday guest of Mrs. Ella Gillenwater.

Rev. Hugh Duty of Coal River was visiting his aged mother Friday who is seriously ill at the home of his brother, Charles Duty, of Spring Dale.

Miss Gay Pettit of Braxton county, former teacher of Banco schools, but who is teaching in the Daisy school, was shopping in Logan last Saturday.

Master Berthold Thomas of Estep is visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Stone, of this place this week.

Mr. Robert Gullett, Misses Luoesa Pardue, and Ethel Gullett were out joy riding last Sunday.

E.C. Varney and Jesse Justice of Manbar were calling on homefolks near here Sunday.

Mrs. J.Q. Adams of Big Creek was the all night guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henley Hager, at Manila last Monday.

Miss Minerva Vannatter of this place left for her home on Big Ugly last Tuesday.

Wonder why W.H. Vickers never visits the Banco school anymore? Call again, Willie. You’re always welcome.

H.F. Lucas of Elm street entertained some of the young folks last Friday night in Banco, with a lot of interesting quaint and picturesque views of Hawaii’s fields of rice, pineapples and bananas, and many other interesting scenes of Hawaii.

Wonder why Ted Hager went to meet the down train last Sunday morning? We imagine it was to meet his affinity.
