“Reporter,” a local correspondent from Gill in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Lincoln Republican printed on Thursday, June 21, 1923:

A large engine with six cars were wrecked on the track at Harts one day last week, but no one was injured.

John Sperry will preach at Gill, Saturday night before the third Sunday in July. Everybody is invited.

Lee Adkins of Hager, will conduct a singing school at the Gill school house beginning the first Sunday in July.

Sons, Brooks, Golden, Peacha and Cassie Hager, of Spears, John Sperry and sons of Price, Lee Spears, and Philip Sperry of Gill, attended the big Lodge celebration at Midkiff last Sunday.

Ward Spears, of this place, attended the baptizing at Leet last Sunday.

Brad Gill has purchased a new camera.

Wm. Sperry and family have recovered from the measles.

“Reporter,” a local correspondent from Gill in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Lincoln Republican printed on Thursday, June 7, 1923:

Ward Spears, Coon Adkins, and Frank Cooper attended prayer meeting at Leet Friday night.

Frank Cooper who has been walking track for the C. & O. at Logan was here the latter part of last week.

There is a number of cases of measles in this section. The entire family of W.M. Sperry has been ill with them.

W.M. Sperry has been teaching a singing school at Buck Lick with good success. Large crowds are attending.

Philip Sperry returned home the latter part of last week from a visit on Parsner Creek, Nine Mile, Hamlin and West Hamlin.

The wages of the section men in this section were raised to $3.20 per day on May 16th. Mr. Tipton is foreman and is okay for the business.

An unnamed local correspondent from Big Creek in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Lincoln Republican printed on Thursday, May 24, 1923:

The Operetta given Saturday night by the Glee Club was enjoyed by many citizens of Big Creek. The Operetta was a great success and shows great talent among the girls of this place.

Miss Mayhill Ferrell spent the weekend with relatives in Logan.

Mr. Bill Vance made a business trip to Huntington Thursday.

Miss Hazel Toney has returned to her position in the Sheriff’s office in Logan, after a visit to home folks here.

Mr. Willie Harmon is in Charleston on business.

Dr. Whithill was called to Leet recently to see Miss Wealthy Lambert, who is very ill with measles.

Miss Opal Hager is spending the week with relatives at Spears.

Uncle Brad Toney, of Toney, was the recent guest of relatives here.

Miss Georgia Lilly, who has been ill for some time, was removed to the Guyan Valley Hospital Sunday.

Rev. J. Green McNeely, of Logan, was a visitor here Sunday.

Mr. W.B. Toney motored to Logan Sunday to see the big ball game.

Jessie Toney, of this place is in Louisville, Ky., attending the dental college.

Mrs. Alta Gill was a Huntington visitor Sunday.

The farmers of this section are slow this year in getting their work started.

Emma Paris has been very ill the past two weeks.

Toney Paris has purchased some fine stock chickens and is going into the poultry business.

Forest fires have damaged the property of Zattoo Cummings a great deal this spring.

John Harder lost a fine horse one day last week.

Bill Fry has gone to Sand Creek to haul for John Shelton.

Anderson Fry is suffering from boils on his neck.

Frank Fry lost six bushels of potatoes one night recently, thieves having entered his potato hole.

During the summer of 1916, two articles printed in the Lincoln Republican offered news regarding Big Ugly Creek in Lincoln County, West Virginia.

ARE MOVING RAILROAD FROM US (Thursday, July 20, 1916)

The Guyan, Big Ugly and Coal River railway running from Gill to a point eight miles above Rector, on Big Ugly creek will soon be a thing of the past, says the Barboursville News. The B. Johnson & Son people who have been operating extensively in that section in the tie and timber business did the last cutting of timber last Thursday and began to tear up the track on the upper end of the line. The iron of that part of the road beyond Leet will be taken up at once and the four miles between the latter place and Gill will be removed as soon as the lumber at Leet is hauled out.

Most of the residents of Leet have moved away in the past week to other timber openings. Albert Gill, a local merchant has bought many of the houses from the company and will tear them down and use the lumber for fencing.

There were between three and four hundred people living at Leet, and most of them will go elsewhere.

COAL GOOD ON BIG UGLY (August 31, 1916)

Civil Engineer Philip Hager was here over Sunday from Big Ugly, where he and his crew have been busy for two or three weeks making coal openings for the Huntington Gas & Development Co. A lot of good coal has been located and the prospects for big coal development on Big Ugly at an early date now looking good.

“Observer,” a local correspondent from Leet in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Lincoln Republican printed on Thursday, March 11, 1915:

There is an alarming lot of sickness in this vicinity at present.

Mrs. John B. Toney, Mrs. Wirt Toney, Misses Dixie and Kizzie Toney, Edna Hager and Elmer Ferrell are all very ill with typhoid fever. Drs. Crockett and Henley are in constant attendance.

Philip Hager, of Hamlin, is here with his daughter, Edna, who is seriously ill with typhoid fever. Misses Madge, Pearl and Ida Hager are also here with their sister, Miss Edna.

Charles Hendrick of Barboursville, was visiting on the creek Saturday and Sunday.

John B. Mullins has gone to Island Creek, where he has employment.

Business is at a stand still here and work is scarce.

A Knights of Pythias lodge was organized at Big Creek Saturday night. Albert Gill, C.C. Fry, Lenzie Lane and Chas. Bolin, of this place were charter members.

Jeff Miller has rented Philip Hager’s farm at the mouth of Big Sulphur and is preparing for a large crop.

The European war makes flour $9.00 per barrel; coal $1.00 per ton; cuts the price of lumber in halves; doubles the price of sugar and cuts the ginseng market “clean out.” Automatic-reversible-double-action — that war.

In all the criticism of the Governor by the democratic press, we have never seen where they claim that the rates of the Light and Heating Co. ought not to have been reduced. Then if they were too high, why all this hue and cry?

Mrs. General Gillenwater is real sick, being threatened with pneumonia.

Mrs. John M. Hager has been indisposed for several days.

John Hunter has been confined to his room the past week.

The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Reynolds, born last Thursday, died Sunday.

J.B. Lambert, who is working at Sharples, Logan county, spent Saturday and Sunday with his family here.

Jeff Duty has purchased Paris Bell’s farm. Mr. Bell has purchased the Noah Adkins farm.

“Observer,” a local correspondent from Leet in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Lincoln Republican printed on Thursday, March 18, 1915:

W.T. Gillenwaters, of Rector, was a business visitor here Tuesday.

Dr. Crockett returned from Charleston Sunday, where he had been on important business.

T.J. Bolin spent Sunday with his family in Huntington.

Albert Walls will move to Sheridan in a few days. We regret to lose Mr. Walls, as he is one of our best citizens, but wish him success in his home.

Miss Doyle, a trained nurse of Huntington, is here in charge of Miss Edna Hager, who is very low with typhoid.

John B. Mullins, who is employed on Island Creek, spent Sunday with his family near this place.

The big lumber mill at this place only runs about one-third time now. The boys here that voted for the party that put lumber practically on the free list have thoroughly repented and say they will never do so any more.

There are several cases of typhoid on the creek above here and we are informed they are no better.

Making molasses is the order of the day.

D.C. Fry has returned home from Matewan where he has employment.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Capt. Hill a bouncing girl baby.

Misses Lottie Lucas and Mollie Adkins, of Midkiff, was the guest of the former’s parents Saturday and Sunday.

Geo. H. Thomas, of Ferrellsburg, is making quite a boost for the Progressive party in this vicinity.

Coonie Lambert, of Leet, was greeting friends in this vicinity Sunday, and his broken leg is improving nicely, an injury which he received while working at Blue Creek some time ago.

Burnie Fry is back from Pinch, W.Va., where he has employment.

Toney Lodge No. 7 gave quite an entertainment at the Greenshoal school house Sunday to a large audience.

Jerry Lambert and wife visited Mrs. Minnie Lambert last week.

Mrs. Baisden, who has been sick for some time, is improving.

We continue to have plenty of rain.

Cattle buyers are numerous in this section now, and their prices are good.

School began here Monday with Miss Dollie Toney, teacher.

Clarence Fry, Clerk Lucas and Wib Adkins took the festival in on Big Creek last Saturday night.

Mrs. W.S. Lambert, Blanche Lambert and Lottie Lucas spent Sunday very pleasantly at Mrs. J.B. Lambert’s at Leet.

Misses Virginia and Edna Brumfield were shopping in Ferrellsburg last Saturday.

Miss Maggie Lucas has been on the sick list for a few days.

The farmers are all glad to see this fine weather. They are all busy planting corn and hoeing potatoes.

Clerk Lucas attended the Republican Convention at Huntington last Wednesday and Thursday. He reports an interesting time.

D.C. Fry spent Saturday and Sunday with his family here.

Some of our people attended church at Low Gap Sunday and heard an interesting sermon delivered by Rev. Nelson.

Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Lucas had as guests Sunday J.W. Stowers and wife, of Ferrellsburg, W.W. Lucas and wife, E.W. Lucas and wife, of Big Creek, and John Sias of Fourteen.

Mrs. Sarah Workman was shopping in Ferrellsburg Saturday.

Mrs. B.D. Toney and granddaughter, Hazel, were visiting on Green Shoal Sunday.

Ed. Reynolds, a hustling republican of Leet, was in our midst Sunday.

Mrs. Rachel Fry is visiting her mother near Leet.

“Violet,” a local correspondent from Toney in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Lincoln Republican printed on Thursday, May 18, 1911:

We are having some very pleasant weather and our farmers are busy planting corn.

The men who have been timbering in this vicinity, floated their timber to market last week and received very low prices.

The Sunday School recently organized at this place, was attended by a large crowd on last Sunday. We hope all the parents will get interested and bring the little ones out next Sunday.

Mr. Messinger, Deputy Assessor, was calling on the citizens in this section last week.

Watson Lucas is hauling logs for the construction of the new Railroad up Big Ugly Creek.

Miss Minnie, the accomplished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Lambert, of Leet, was calling on Misses Maggie and Lottie Lucas Sunday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Toney and children, of Big Creek, were visiting at Toney Saturday evening and Sunday.

Messrs. Clerk and Wilburn Adkins, two jovial republicans of this place, were calling on friends in “Pumpkin Center” last Sunday.

Miss Evana Fry is suffering with a felon on her finger.

Winter still remains and there is lots of sickness in this vicinity. The Doctors are kept quite busy.

The Lucas Bros. are hauling some fine timber for Ward Baisden.

Peter M. Toney made a business trip to Leet Monday.

J.B. Toney, of Big Creek, was visiting here Sunday.

Irvin Workman made a business trip to the West Fork of Hart, Saturday.

B.B. Lucas passed here Saturday with a fine gang of cattle.

Miss Ettie Baisden visited here Friday.

K.E. Toney’s new residence is nearing completion.

If this escapes the waste basket, will come again next week.

“Ruben,” a local correspondent from Toney in Lincoln County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Lincoln Republican printed on Thursday, November 10, 1910:

Our farmers are busy gathering corn.

The sick of this vicinity are progressing nicely toward recovery.

J.L. Hager passed through this section on business recently.

E.W. Lucas, of this place, was transacting business at Leet Monday.

County Superintendent Pauley was visiting our schools the past week delivering excellent instruction.

Christian Lambert is busily engaged delivering coal.

Quite a number of our people attended the marriage of J.A. Farley and Miss Etta Moore, at Atensville, Saturday.

J.W. Stowers, of Ferrellsburg, was calling on friends at Toney, Saturday.

We learn that J.W. Sias, who has been sick so long, is improving.

G.C. Fry, the C. & O. supervisor was a business caller at Toney this week.

Irvin Workman has returned home from “Pumpkin Center” where he has been engaged in business.

B.B. Holton and brother, Andrew, passed through our midst Saturday on their way to B. Abbotts.

Miss Dollie Toney, who is teaching school at Big Creek, Logan county, spent a day or two at home recently.

Philip Hager, of Hamlin was mingling with friends in our vicinity last week.

Anthony Fry, of this place, was called to Rector, Sunday, on account of the death of his niece.
