Little Earl McComas died yesterday (Tuesday) at 5 P.M. Burial was made the following day in the family burying ground.

Dr. J.E. Whitehall has been at this home in Indiana since last Thursday on a vacation. We are looking for him to return soon.

Mrs. Stone, our boarding house keeper, who has been ill is now improving and will soon be able to attend to her duties again.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Bedford Queen Tuesday night, a fine boy baby.

The Daisy Coal Mines have resumed operations and are running daily now since a temporary shutdown.

A little son of Mr. Bledsoe, the section foreman, is reported quite ill at this writing.

Mr. Gordon Lilly, one of the pioneer settlers on Lilly’s Branch, is reported out again after a severe illness. Uncle Gordon is one of the oldest citizens in this neighborhood and is past 84 years in age.

Mr. Burgess, of Logan, has moved into the house recently occupied by Dr. Chafin who has moved to Hamlin.

Quite a little excitement prevailed here last week when a colored man and his wife engaged in a free for all and the wife was assisted by a third party. The battle raged in earnest until the arrival of an officer who was required to shoot before the trio could be subdued. Moonshine was at the bottom of the trouble and they were hauled before Squire Lowe where they were each heavily fined.

In the last few days Daisy Coal mines started up after being shut down for about four months.

Mr. West, mining engineer of Charleston, has been in Big Creek looking after business matters the last few days.

Mr. P.M. Toney, member of the County Court, has been to Charleston and other places pertaining to business matters for the last few days.

Mrs. J.B. Toney and family of Huntington have been visiting relatives in Big Creek for several days.

Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Markham have been visiting relatives here for the last few days.

There has been a lot of sickness here in the last two weeks and a number of cases of pneumonia.

Mr. and Mrs. W.H. McKinney, who have been visiting relatives, have gone to house keeping and decided to stay here. Mr. McKinney is employed as electrician for the Daisy Coal Co.

A new baby was born to Mr. and Mrs. Millard Sanders.

Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Stone of Peach Creek are visiting Mr. Stone’s mother at Big Creek.

A bad cough and cold is interfering with Uncle Gord Lilly’s matrimonial arrangements as announced by him. But Uncle Gord tells us that this matter will be attended to promptly.

Dr. Crockett has been away attending to business matters in Charleston.

A great protracted meeting has been going on at Stone Branch for the past two weeks. There were sixteen conversions. A number will be baptized Sunday.

We are having some fine weather after such a cold winter.

What will the boys of Chapmanville do now the works are just about shut down?

Miss Katie Chapman of Logan was seen in our little town once more.

Miss Lola Shackelford of Logan was the all night guest of her aunt Saturday.

P.M. Toney and A.J. Thomas were calling on friends in the lower end of the city Sunday.

What made you look so blue, Ace? She will stay longer next time.

Calling on Mrs. Martha Roberts Sunday were the following: Mr. Von Browning and family, Clifford Griffin, Lizzie Wagner, Mrs. Charlie Hale, and Miss Carmicle.

There sure was a turn out at Chapmanville Sunday to inspect the new road.

Miss Carlie Compton and sweetie and Ernest Compton were out walking Sunday.

Wallie Kestler has been on the sick list for a few days but is better at this writing.

The measles are getting bad around here. Mr. Toney’s family and Hughie Elllis’ family has them.

Uncle Gord Lilly is visiting Garland Adams the past week.

Jim Hardwick and Johnnie Webb were out walking Sunday.

Quite a number of people from Kitchen were in Chapmanville Saturday. Squire Lowe was in the bunch, also James Dingess.

Okey Bryant and wife seem to enjoy themselves.

Winter must be over. People are planting gardens here.

An unknown local correspondent from Chapmanville in Logan County, West Virginia, offered the following items, which the Logan Banner printed on February 26, 1926:

Squire Lowe and Squire Adams were both in town Saturday dealing out justice to all litigants that wanted to be heard.

On last Sunday evening both churches here were visited by a large delegation of Klansmen in full regalia who left a nice donation at each church for the ministers. The ministers said at each place if the Klansmen did not save the country it was gone.

Our genial C. & O. operator here sure does love the fair sex.

S.T. Perry has moved his family from this place to Charleston, his work being on Cabin Creek.

Singing school next Sunday starts at the Holiness Church. Albert Estep will be the teacher. Everybody come.

J.H. Tanner who has been field manager here for the United Fuel Gas Co., for some time has accepted a position as superintendent for the Walka Talka Gas Co., which will necessitate his moving his family to Stollings.

Frank Ballard is still working at his same job.

Kaylor Butcher has been made past Grand Chief of the Sons of Rest.

Uncle Gordon Lilly has returned to town after an absence of several days.

Between 1847 and 1869, the following men served as justices of the peace in the Harts Creek community, then a part of Logan County, Virginia. The primary source for this material is Deed Book D, which is located at the Logan County Clerk’s Office in Logan, WV. Material is arranged based on the grantor’s name as given in the deed, the grantee’s name as given in the deed, and the date of the deed. Some of the deeds are partially destroyed, obscuring dates. This list is a work in progress and will be updated periodically. Many thanks to the county clerks and their employees who have always been so helpful to my research these past twenty-five years.
