i was wondering who Squire Toney was? can anyone tell me about him? Thanks so much!!
Hi, Sherry. Squire Toney (1842-1921) was the son of Burbus C. and Sarah Kesiah (Lucas) Toney. He married Nancy Jane Gore (1846-1918). They lived on Big Ugly Creek in Lincoln County, WV.
Brandon, in your research have you located a likely burial place for the first Squire Toney? And Nancy Brown Toney? I’ve been trying to determine the movement of homes from Squire to Burbus to Squire. Of course I know where the Second Squire lived and I’ve been told that Burbus lived near the old schoolhouse, but I’m very fuzzy about where the first Squire’s home was established. As a teenager (eons ago) I went with family to a place on either Broad Branch or Rockpen (I think) that was a “family place” passed down to an uncle. It was very primitive with an animal pen built into the house. I’m wondering if it could have been Squire I’s home. Any guidance would be appreciated.
I believe that an 1810s map of Cabell County (which included present-day Lincoln County) showed the location of Squire Toney’s home. That’s a clue. I’ve also copied all of his grants/deeds. I’ll need to think about this.
Thank you, Brandon. I’ve gone through the documents I have already copied and transcribed and have made an inventory of them. I may have others because I copied recorded instruments over 20+ years of doing title work. (And because I’m not yet fully organized). I would be happy to send you the inventory to see if I might have things not in your research. I could then scan and email to you if you see anything that might be helpful. I also located an old county topo map on which I had attempted to answer the burial question at some time in the past. I don’t know if it would help, but again I’m happy to send it. I also have the deed from Squire and brothers (and Leah) of William’s property in Giles County, to John Toney, his brother – if that is something you do not have in your research. Thank you so much for looking at this. Is the 1810 map of record in Cabell County? If so, I’d like to get a copy of it.
I found the 1810s map in a Cabell County history. Send me your email address and I’ll forward the map to you. My email address is brankirk@yahoo.com
