Hello Brandon – my grandmother was a Justice of the Peace in Clay Co, WV. I’ve always wondered what she did. Can you provide insight on their duties?
After about 1881, justices decided lower cases within a district that could be appealed to the circuit court. Examples of cases were land disputes, debts, bastardy, theft, and assaults. They commanded constables to serve subpoenas and arrest accused persons. JPs were replaced by magistrates in the 1970s.
Thank you!
