I’m rather happy to see this! So this is the actual post office building? When my husband and I were here searching for information on Hawkins Bishop’s murder, we could only guess as to what this building actually used to be. Jim thought it might have been a general store, I clearly wasn’t sure, and neither of us guessed that it was the actual post office. Thanks for sharing.
Based on post office records, Whirlwind had several post office locations during its fifty or so years of existence. Ordinarily, post offices were located inside a general store. A post office located in a store was good for business and store keepers competed to have it. As I understand it, this store building housed its final post office.
Very interesting. When we took this picture sometime ago, it was among other photos we took of the Whirlwind area. If you’d like to use some of those as well, just let me know. You can contact me at Nancy.Bishop1979@gmail.com. Jim has since passed away, the man that was murdered near here in 1933, Hawkins Bishop, was Jim’s great uncle.
Hi, Nancy. I may be misunderstanding your post. Are you saying that I used one of your pictures here? The photo shown here at the blog is one I took myself. If that’s not what you are saying, sorry! I misunderstood. I live about ten minutes away from Whirlwind and pass through there every couple of weeks. Take care!
Regarding this particular structure, I have copies of photos taken inside the building when it was still used as a store. They are very nice!
